1999-2009 EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY SPORTS ASSOCIATION Introduction

The program of the European University Championships

started in 2001, when the first two championships in Bas-

ketball and Volleyball were organised in Serbia and Mon-

tenegro and Portugal. Since then the events were renamed

European Universities Championships and their number has

been growing year by year and reached 15 sports in 2009.

Some of these sports, namely Bridge, Golf, Karate and Taek-

wondo are organised biannually, while the rest of the sports

take place every year.

The most popular sports on the program are Basketball, Vol-

leyball, Rowing and Football which currently attract over 400

participants per championship.

Together with the increase of sports also the number of

countries, university teams and participants present at the

events has risen significantly.
