1 st EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

The first European University Basketball Championship was
organised by the Portuguese University Sports Federation
(FADU) in Aveiro, Portugal in 2001. The event was unfortu-
nately affected by the terrorist attack in the United States of
America, due to which many teams cancelled their participa-
tion the very last moment. In the end, the participation of
8 university teams from 6 European countries was recorded.
The first title of European University Champions went to
the men’s team of the University of Maribor which won all
the matches and thus defeated their colleagues from Athens
(75:65), Aveiro (78:69), Oxford (73:50) and Lisbon (85:62)
and to women’s team from the University of Novi Sad, which
won against the University of Lille in the finals with 83:53.
