Recall that in uniform circular motion, an object travels with a constant speed around a circle. If the object’s motion
is projected onto a vertical or horizontal line, it resembles the motion of a vibrating object on the end of a spring. In
other words, it is equivalent to SHM.


Projected Motion


Imagine viewing one of the cars (shown as blue dots below) of a Ferris wheel edge-on as inFigure10.3.The car
appears to move up and down. Effectively, we are projecting the circular motion of the car onto a vertical line. If we
were watching from above, we would be projecting the motion onto a horizontal line. In either case, the projected
motion of the car would appear as an up-and-down or back-and-forth motion.
