Vocabulary
Alternative Hypothesis
The set of values that an investigator believes may contain the plausible values of a population parameter in a
significance test.
Null Hypothesis
The standard value of a parameter that is assumed to be true in a significance test until possibly refuted by the
data in favor of an alternative hypothesis.
P-Value
The probability of seeing a result from a random sample that is as extreme as or more extreme than the result
obtained from the random sample if the null hypothesis is true.
t-Distribution
The distribution oft= x ̄−μ
s/
√
n
when the data are a random sample from a normally distributed population.
