characterstepsonahieroglyphoutoforder,thestatuesreact
asdescribedin“SphinxStatues.”Steppingonthewrongtile
doesnotresetthesequence.
Whenthefinaltileinthesequenceissteppedon,the
followingthingsallhappenatonce:

 Thestoneblockatarea 35 Asinksintothefloor,creating
anopenpassagetotheeast.
 Anylocustsconjuredbythesphinxstatuesaredispelled.
 Thehieroglyphicfloorisdisabled.After 24 hours,
Witherssends 1 d 4 tombdwarvestoresetthetrap.


SphinxStatues


Eachofthesestatuesdepictsalife-sizegynosphinx,andall
fourradiateaurasofabjurationandconjurationtoadetect
magicspellorsimilareffect.Thestatuesareimperviousto
damageandspells.
Whenanycreaturestepsonanincorrectfloortile,allfour
statuesyawnandmassesofmagicallysummonedlocustsfly
outoftheirmouths.Thelocustsformasinglecloudthatfillsa
15 - footcubecenteredabovetheoffendingfloortile.Each
creatureinthecloudwhenitforms,aswellasanycreature
thatentersthecloudforthefirsttimeonaturnorstartsits
turnthere,takes 44 ( 8 d 10 )piercingdamage.Anycreature
reducedto 0 hitpointsbythistrapiskilledandeatentothe
bonebythedevouringlocusts.Thecloudlastsfor 1 minuteor
untilanothercloudoflocustsiscreated.


Sarcophagus


I’jin’sgoldensarcophaguscannotbeopenedbyanymeans
otherthansteppingoneightfloortilesinthecorrectorder.
Thesarcophagusisworth 7 , 500 gpintactbutweighs 75
pounds.Removingitfromthefuneralbargecausesfourfloor-
to-ceilingwallsofforce(likethosecreatedbyawallofforce
spell)tosurroundthedaisonallfoursides.Thewallslastuntil
destroyedoruntilthesarcophagusisreturnedtothebarge.
Thesarcophaguscontainsthefragilebonesofanalmiraj
(I’jin’sanimalform;seeappendixD),aswellasitsspiralhorn,
whichfunctionsasawandofwonder.Thehornturnstodust
andisdestroyedifitleavestheTomboftheNineGods(butsee
"LostTreasures").
I’jin’sSpirit.ThespiritofI’jintriestoinhabitanycharacter
whotouchesthehorn(see"SpiritsoftheNineTrickster
Gods").WhenI’jin’sspiritmanifests,read:

FloatingPlatforms


Thecircularwoodenplatformsare 10 feetindiameterand
hoverbetween 6 and 12 feetapart,asshownonmap 5. 3 .They
floatatthesamelevelasthebalconies, 15 feetbelowthe
ceilingand 60 feetabovethepitfloor.Adetectmagicspellor
similarmagicrevealsaurasofabjurationandtransmutation
aroundeachplatform.Eachdiskiswideenoughthat
characterscanmove 10 feetbeforejumping(see“Movement”
inchapter 8 ofthePlayer’sHandbook).Theplatformsbob
slightlywhenanythinglandsonthem,asthoughtheywere
floatingonwater.Anycreaturethatfallsfromaplatformto
thepitfloortakes 21 ( 6 d 6 )bludgeoningdamage.Casting
dispelmagiconaplatformcausesittofall.

WailingWinds


Iftheleveronthewestbalconyispulled,thefiendish
statueunclenchesitsfiststorevealamarble-sizedobjectin
thepalmofeachhand(see“Treasure”below).Simultaneously,
howlingwindsriseupandfilltheroom.Returningtheleverto
itsoriginaluppositioncausesthewindstoabateandthe
statue’sfiststoclose.
