39 )mustbeinsertedintotheindentations.Eacheyelightsup
asitclicksintoplace.Witheacheyethatisinserted,the
reflectionsofthecharactersinthemirrorbecome
progressivelyunhealthier—losingweight,hair,andteethas
theycometoresembleundead.
Whenallteneyesareinplace,theydisappearandthedoor
grindsopenandremainsopenhenceforth.

Whenthedooropens,read:

Thevaultdoorgrindsupward,revealingadomed,
candlelitroomfiftyfeethigh.Thepolishedmarblefloor
issoperfectlyreflectivethatitcreatestheillusionof
standingattheentrancetoasphere.Ninealcovesfilled
withglitteringtreasureopenupalongthewalls.Inthe
middleofthechamber,alargesphericalobjecthovers
underablacksilkdrapetwentyfeetabovethefloor.
Thebeholder,Belchorzh(pronouncedBEL-korj),floatsat
thetopoftheroom.Acererakcastawishspelltorender
Belchorzhinvisible.Asuccessfuldispelmagic(DC 19 )caston
thebeholderorcontactwithanantimagicfieldendsits
invisibility.Belchorzhreactstointrudersasdescribedinthe
“BeholderTactics”sectionbelow.
Thehallcontainsonehundredlitcandles.Whilethe
candlesremaininsidethisvault,theyburnindefinitely.Ifa
candleistakenfromtheroom,itburnsdownnormally.
Thefloorbeneaththedomeismagicallyslick.Anycreature
thatstepsontoorstartsitsturnonthefloormustsucceedona
DC 10 Dexteritysavingthroworfallprone.Whenan
untetheredcreatureisshovedorotherwisemovedacrossthe
floor,ittravelsinonedirectionanddoesnotstopuntilit
comesintocontactwithawallorotherbarrier.

AnycharactersinhabitedbythespiritsofKubazan,
Obo’laka,orWongoreceivethefollowingadvice:
 ImpulsiveKubazanurgeshishosttoattackwhateveris
hidingundertheblackdrape,withnowarningor
negotiation.
 CautiousObo’lakathinksabeholderishiddenunderthe
blackdrapeandurgesherhosttofleeatonce.
 Whenhebecomesawareofthebeholder,reckless
Wongosuggeststhathishostattackanotherparty
member,totrickthebeholderintothinkingithasanally.


BlackDrape,IronSphere


Theblackdrapeconcealsamagicalsphereofiron, 6 feetin
diameterandfloating 20 feetabovethefloor.ANystul’smagic
auraspellplacedonthespheremakesitseemlikeanevil
aberrationtofeaturesormagicthatcansensesuch
information.
Theironsphereishollowandimmobile,anditremains
inertwhilethedrapecoversit.Belchorzhcanuseits
telekineticeyeraytoremovethedrapeatanytime,revealing
thesphereandcausingittoemitamagicalmagneticfield.
Eachcreatureintheroomwearingmetalarmorispulledto
thesphereandbecomesstucktoit,asdoesanymetalweapon
orobjectthatisn’tsecuredorbeingheld.Anycreaturestuckto
thesphereisrestraineduntilthemagneticfielddeactivates.


Anyrangedattackmadeinthechamberthatuses
ammunitionmadewhollyorpartlyfrommetalhas
disadvantageontheattackroll;iftheattackmisses,the
ammunitionbecomesstucktothesphere.
Throwingtheblackdrapeoverthesphererendersit
temporarilyinert,withcreaturesandobjectsstucktoitfalling
tothefloor.Asuccessfuldispelmagic(DC 16 )castonthe
spheredispelstheNystul’smagicauraspell,permanently
deactivatesthemagneticfield,andcausesthespheretocrash
tothefloor.Thissendsawebofcracksthroughthemarble,
negatingthefloor’sfrictionlesseffectandallowingcreatures
tomoveacrossitnormally.Thespherealsodeactivatesand
fallsifitcomesintocontactwithanantimagicfieldoris
destroyed.
ThesphereisaLargeobjectwithAC 20 ; 100 hitpoints;
resistancetobludgeoning,piercing,andslashingdamagefrom
nonmagicalattacks;andimmunitytopoisonandpsychic
damage.Itweighs 1 , 000 pounds.Whilethemagneticfieldis
active,anyattackmadeagainstthespherewithametal
weaponautomaticallyhits,thoughtheweaponbecomesstuck
tothesphereafterimpact.

BeholderTactics


TheTomboftheNineGodsisnottrulythebeholder’s
domain,soitcan’tuselairactions.
Theinvisiblebeholderputsasmuchdistancebetween
itselfandtheadventurersaspossible,whilemakingsureto
notcatchtheironsphereinitsAntimagicCone.
Belchorzhdoesn’tpursueintruderswhofleeitsvault.
However,iftheadventurersstealevenonecopperpiecefrom
itstrove,thebeholderusesthealiengrowththroughoutthis
levelofthedungeonagainstthem.Wheneverthecharacters
comenearapatchofthegrowth,itsproutsaneyestalkand
attacks(see"AlienGrowth").
ThebeholderknowsDeepSpeechandUndercommon,and
itreferstoitselfinthethirdperson.Haughtyanddefiant,it
delightsinthedestructionoftombrobberswhilerefusingto
yield.Anycharacterwhounderstandsitswordscantranslatea
fewofBelchorzh’schoicesayings:
 “Youfightlikeflumphs!”
 “YouarenomatchforBelchorzhtheUnseen’sterrible
eyerays!”
 “Whatugly,imperfectcreaturesyouare.”
