wallsshowfacelesshumanoidfiguresdoubledoverin
pain,clutchingattheirheadsandears.

Despitetheominousmuralsandthedevilfacecarving,this
hallisdevoidoftraps.Anycharacterwhosearchesthedevil
facefindsalizardhidinginthecarving’sshallowmouthcavity.
TherecipientofanawakenspellcastbyaChultandruid,the
lizardhasanIntelligencescoreof 10 andspeaksDruidic.The
CompanyoftheYellowBannercaptureditinOmuand
broughtittothetombthinkingitmightbeusefulforsetting
offtraps.Thelizardescapedandwounduphere.Itdoesn’t
knowwhatbecameofitscaptorsandhelpsthecharactersany
wayitcaniftheypromisetoreturnittoOmu.

Anantimagicfieldfillseachcell,renderingmagicitems
useless,suppressingongoingmagicaleffects,andpreventing

Wavesofheatblastoutofthiscrampedcell.Thewalls
arescribedwithreliefcarvingsshowingvolcanoes
settingcitiesablaze.Rowsoftinyholesareboredinto
thefloorandtheten-foot-highceiling.Ahuman
skeletonembeddedintheoppositewallholdsaniron
sconcewithaburningredcandleinit.

TheskeletonisallthatremainsofadeadOmuanengineer.
Aslongasthecandleremainsinthiscell,itburnsindefinitely.
Iftakenfromthearea,itburnsdownnormally.
SecretDoor.IfWithersiswatching,hetriestotrapas
manycharactersashecaninthecellbywhisperinga
commandwordthatcausesthesecretdoorinthesouthwallto
slideshutandlock.Nokeyholeorvisibleopeningmechanism
canbefoundonthesecretdoor.Thesecretdoorremains
sealeduntilthecharactersescapefromthecellsordietrying.
Awedge,spike,orsimilarobjectcanbeusedtopreventthe
doorfromclosing.


LavaTrap.Moltenlavabeginspouringfromthetinyholes
intheceilingassoonasanycharactercomeswithin 1 footof
thecandleorremovesitfromthesconce.Thelavarainsdown
andmagicallydrainsawaythroughtheholesinthefloor.Each
creatureinthecellwhenthelavabeginstofallmustmakea
DC 20 Dexteritysavingthrow,taking 22 ( 4 d 10 )firedamageon
afailedsave,orhalfasmuchdamageonasuccessfulone.Any
creaturethatentersthecellforthefirsttimeonaturnor
startsitsturntheremustrepeatthesavingthrow.Becauseof
thecell’santimagicfield,magicitemsandspellsthatprovide
resistancetofireoffernoprotectionhere.
ExtinguishingtheCandle.Ifthecandleisextinguished
insidethecell,theantimagicfieldisdispelledandallcreatures
inthecellareteleportedtooneoftheothercells,asfollows:
 Ifthecandle’sflameisdousedwithwaterorsomeother
liquid,creaturesinthecellareteleportedtothewater
cell(area 47 B).
 Ifthecandle’sflameisblownoutorsmotheredbyalack
ofoxygen(includingbeinggroundoutagainstthewallor
floor),creaturesareteleportedtotheaircell(area 47 C).

47 B.WaterCell


Youappearinacellthatsmellsmoldy.Itsdampwalls
arecoveredwithlivingsnailsandoysters,andfeature
sculpturalreliefsoftidalwavesdestroyingcoastalcities
andships.Amerfolkskeletonembeddedinonewall
clutchesanironsconcefittedwithaburningredcandle.
Suddenly,lukewarmwaterbeginstopourintothecell
throughrowsoftinyholesintheten-foot-highceiling.
Thecandleisadistractionandoffersnowayoutofthecell.
Aslongasitremainsinthiscell,thecandleburnsindefinitely
untilextinguished.Iftakenfromthearea,itburnsdown
normally.
FloodTrap.Thewaterfillsthecellatarateof 1 footper
round,taking 10 roundstofilltheroom.Ifthecandleisleftin
itssconce,therisingwaterextinguishesitonthefourthround.
Tryingtostufforblocktheholesdoesn’tstopthewaterfrom
pouringin.Becauseofthecell’santimagicfield,spellsand
magicitemsthatenablecharacterstobreatheunderwater
don’tfunctionhere.Anycharacterwhorunsoutofairbegins
tosuffocate(see“TheEnvironment”inchapter 8 ofthe
Player’sHandbook).
SnailsandOysters.Therearedozensofsnailsandoysters
clingingtothewalls.Acharactercanuseanactiontoremove
anoysterorsnailfromawall,crackitopen,andeatit.Thefirst
timeanoysterorsnailisremovedfromawall,thecell’s
antimagicfieldisdispelled.Eatinganoysterteleportsa
character(alongwithhisorherpossessions)totheaircell
(area 47 C),whileeatingasnailteleportsacharacter(along
withhisorherpossessions)totheearthcell(area 47 D).
Whenthelastcharacterleavesthecell,rowsoftinyholes
openinthefloor,allowingthewatertodrainoutatarateof 1
footperround.
