fromthewalloneithersideofthedooraretwo
matchingbronzesculptures—eachtheheadandneck
ofaserpentwithfangsbared.Onthelintelabovethe
doorisinscribedthefollowingmessageinCommon:
“Warmlikeflame,coldforthecruel,stillforthedead,
gruelfortheghoul.”

Thestenchofrottingfleshwaftsfromthebronzeserpents.
Closeexaminationrevealsdriedbloodineachstatue’smouth
andtinytubesatthebackofitsneck.Thetubesextendinto
secretroomsoneithersideofthedoor,wheresixghastsare
confined(threeperroom).
Thestonedooropenswhenapintormoreoffreshbloodis
pouredintothemouthofeachbronzeserpent.Theblooddrips
intothechambersholdingtheghasts,drivingthemintoa
slurpingfrenzythatcanbeheardthroughtheserpents’open
mouths.Oncesatedwithblood,theghastsyankchainstohoist
thedooropen.
Thedoorweighs 1 , 000 poundsandcanbeliftedby
characterswithacombinedStrengthof 33 ormore.Ifthe
charactersdoso,secretdoorsoneithersideofthehallway
behindthedoorunlockandslideopen.Thisreleasesthe
hungryghasts,whichfightuntilturnedordestroyed.Each
lockedsecretdoorcanbeopenedwithaknockspellorforced
openbyacharacterwhosucceedsonaDC 22 Strength
(Athletics)check.

alongtheledgesholdpaintedwoodenstatuesofhornet-
headedhumanoidwarriors,eachwearingagrassskirt
andclutchingaspear.

Agruesomethronelashedtogetherofboneandstrips
ofskinstandsatopthewestledge.Afearsomehorned
skullsurmountsthethrone,andsmallskullsarepiled
aroundit.Theseatofthethroneappearstobemadeof
stretchedskinandhasametalscepterrestingonit.

Thisvaultedchamberfeaturesaten-foot-deepsunken
floorsurroundedbyledgeswithoutrailings.Alcoves
alongtheledgesholdpaintedwoodenstatuesofhornet-
headedhumanoidwarriors,eachwearingagrassskirt

andclutchingaspear.

Agruesomethronelashedtogetherofboneandstrips
ofskinstandsatopthewestledge.Afearsomehorned
skullsurmountsthethrone,andsmallskullsarepiled
aroundit.Theseatofthethroneappearstobemadeof
stretchedskinandhasametalscepterrestingonit.

Shufflingaboutthesunkenportionoftheroomare
threegaunthumanoidfiguresindustyrobesdrapedin
cobwebs,theireyesandmouthsstitchedshut.Armed
withbrushesandclaypotsofpigment,theypaintthe
wallsandpillarswithgrim,poorlyrenderedillustrations.
Fourpillarssupporttheceiling,whichis 15 feetabovethe
ledgesand 25 feetabovethesunkenfloor.Thewoodenstatues
areharmless(theirspearsaremerelydecorative)andweigh
150 poundseach.
