hagswhilethecharacterslept.Charactershadaslightchance
ofmeetingthehagasarandomwildernessencounter(see
appendixB);however,whenandwherethetheftoccurredis
uptoyou.
Thecloneisnotaperfectcopy.Itisshorterandscrawnier
thanthecharacterafterwhomit’smodeled,andithas
deformities.Usethecommonerstatisticstorepresentthis
creature,applyingracialtraitsasappropriate.
Theclonehasnonameandnomemoryofhavingbeen
created.However,thehagshaveforgedamagicallinkbetween
thecloneandthecharacterfromwhichitwasmade.Theclone
knowseverythingthecharacterknows,uptoandincludingall
presentknowledge.Thehagshavebeeninterrogatingthe
clonetolearneverythingabouttheadventurers.Nowthat
theyhavenomoreuseforsuchinformation,theSewnSisters
plantokillandeattheclone.
Cauldron
Atarrygreenish-blackbrewfillsthebronzecauldron.Any
creaturethatdrinksthebrewisstunnedfor 1 d 10 minutes.
Whilestunned,thecreaturesuccumbstoseizuresbroughton
bythedarkdreamsoftheatropal.
Thebronzelidofthecauldronliesonthefloornearby.If
thelidisplacedonthecauldron,thegreensmokethatfillsthe
roomdissipatesafter 1 minute.
SkeletonGate
Whenthecharactersgetcloseenoughtomakeoutthedetails
ofthegreendoor,read:
Thistwelve-foot-high,ten-foot-widedoorismadeof
greenstone,itssurfacecarvedwithgrinninggoblin
skeletons.Abeltofsmoothstonespansthedoorata
heightoffourfeet,setwithfivegoldsymbolsinarow:a
triangle,asquare,apentagon,ahexagon,andan
octagon.Eachsymbolisengravedonarecessedcircular
seal.
Thegeometricsymbolsare 6 inchesacross, 1 footapart,
andsetintostonedisks 8 inchesindiameter.Hiddenbehind
thesealsarefivekeyholesthatconforminsizeandshapeto
theheadsoftheskeletonkeysfoundontheothertomblevels
(see"SkeletonKeys").Eachtimethecharacterscompleteatrialinareas 72
through 76 ,onestonesealrollsaside,exposingthekeyhole
behindit.Whenaskeletonkeyisinsertedintoits
correspondingkeyholeandturnedclockwise,atumblerinside
thedoorunlocks.Whenallfivetumblersunlock,theskeleton
gatecanbepulledopenlikeanormal(albeitheavy)door,
revealingawidestaircasethatdescends 20 feettoarea 77.
Thedooranditssealsareimpervioustodamageandspells,
andcannotbeopenedinamannerotherthanthatwhichis
prescribedabove.
FacingtheNightHags.Ifthecharactersmanagetoopen
allfivekeyholesandhavetherequisiteskeletonkeysintheir
possession,theSewnSistersemergefromtheBorderEthereal
andattackthem.Thehags’goalistoseizeoneormoreofthe
skeletonkeys,thuspreventingthecharactersfromreaching
theSoulmonger.Ifahagobtainsaskeletonkey,itcacklesasit
returnstotheBorderEtherealwithit.
Iftwohagsdie,thethirdtriestobargainwiththe
characters,offeringusefulinformationinexchangeforherlife.
Thehagmakesthecharactersswearontheirmortalsoulsnot
toharmheronceherinformationisdivulged.Anycharacter
