TheYtepkaSociety,alsoknownastheTriceratopsSociety,is
basedinPortNyanzaruanddedicatedtopreventingany
individualorgroupfromabusingpowerandupsettingthe
naturalsocialorder.Itsmembersareprimarilyneutralgood
Chultans.Inmanyrespects,thesociety’sgoalsaresimilarto
thoseoftheHarpers.
TheYtepkaSocietywasinstrumentalinliberatingPort
Nyanzarufromforeignpowersandfacilitatingtheriseofthe
sevenmerchantprinces.Itsmembersnowworktirelesslyto
preventtheZhentarimandotherdubiousfactionsfromtaking
overthegovernmentorgainingundueinfluence.TheYtepkas
alsoworkcovertlytoeliminatethethreatfrompirates,but
they’vebeenunabletolocatethepirates’baseortrackdown
piratespiesinthecity.Ahandsomerewardawaitsthosewho
candefinitivelypinpointthepirates’baseorcapturetheir
ships.
Currentlytherearefewerthanfiftyactivemembersofthe
YtepkaSociety.Theydon’tadvertisetheirmembershipbut
identifyoneanotherusingasimplehandgesture:araisedleft
handwiththeindexfinger,middlefinger,andthirdfinger
extended,representingthethreehornsofthetriceratops.
Whenthesocietyjudgesthatsomeonehasdamagedthe
socialfabricofChultorisonthevergeofcommittingagreat
wrong,itpresentsawarningbyanonymouslydeliveringan
irontokenbearingthelikenessofatriceratops.It’suptothe
markedindividualtofigureoutthemeaningofthetokenand
takestepstocorrecttheoffendingbehaviororundothe
damage.Ifthepersonignoresthewarningandpersistsin
offendingthesociety,theYtepkassecurepermissionfromthe
merchantprincestometeoutpunishmentastheyseefit,upto
andincludingasanction(seethe“LawsandPunishments”
sidebarearlierinthischapter).
Unfortunately,becauseofthesociety’ssecretiveness,not
manypeopleunderstandwhatthoseirontokenssignify,and
there’salotofmisinformationabouttheYtepkasinPort
Nyanzaru.Thesocietydoesn’trecollectitstokens,either,so
unscrupuloustypeshaveusedold(orevencounterfeit)tokens
tofrightencompetitorsawayfrombusinessventures.
