Racing
Playercharactersmightgetinvolvedinadinosaurrace,either
throughtheirowninterestorbecausethey’reapproachedbya
racingteam.Inthiscase,you’llneedtoplayouttherace.This
canbequiteabitoffun,especiallyifyouletplayerswhose
charactersaren’tdirectlyinvolvedtakeoveratleastsomeof
theNPCracers.Encourageeveryonetoracehard,evenifit’sin
thegroup’sbestinterestforaparticulardinosaurtowin.
Aracerunsalengthof 300 feet;thisisabstract,asarace
actuallycoversalotmoreground.Everyround,eachrider
makesaWisdom(AnimalHandling)check;theDCsfor
differenttypesofdinosaursarelistedintheRacingDinosaurs
table.WitheachsuccessfulAnimalHandlingcheck,thefirst
numberlistedasthedinosaur’sspeedisaddedtoits“running
tally.”Ifthecheckfails,thatdinosaur’stallydoesn’tincrease
thatturn.Whenaracer’stallyequalsorexceeds 300 ,that
dinosaurcrossesthefinishline.Aracercantrytomoveatthe
higherlistedspeedbylashingtheanimalfuriously;inthiscase,
theAnimalHandlingcheckismadewithadvantage,butthe
dinosaurmustalsomakeasuccessfulDC 10 Constitution
checkattheendofthisroundoritsspeedishalvedfortherest
oftherace.
Noinitiativeisinvolved.RiderscanmaketheirAnimal
Handlingchecksinanyorder,orallatthesametime.Iftwoor
moredinosaurscrossthefinishlineonthesameround,the
onewiththehighesttallywins.Ifthetalliesarethesame,the
racerstied.Intheeventofatie,brawlsarelikelytobreakout
intracksidebettingpools.
Intheunchainedevent,dinosaurscanattackother
dinosaursiftheirtalliesarewithin 50 ofeachotherattheend
ofaround.Eachdinosaur’spertinentcombatstatisticsare
listedontheRacingDinosaurstable.Ifadinosaurhashalfor
fewerofitsstartinghitpoints,theridermakesAnimal
Handlingcheckswithdisadvantage.
Forsimplicity,riderscan’tattackorbeattacked,butDMs
withacruelstreakmightbetemptedtorelaxthatrule.Justbe
awarethatifriderattacksareallowed,theeventismorelikely
tobecomeastraight-updinosaurfightthananything
resemblingarace.Raisingadinosaurtobearacerisdifficult
andexpensive.Mostownersaren’twillingtoloseone—
especiallyafastone—inaweeklybloodfest.
