Vengeance.AsidefromCommanderBreakbone,thestandard
garrisonatthebaseconsistsoffifty-eightpeople,thoughthe
actualnumberofeffectivewarriorsatanygiventimeisusually
lowerduetosickness.Breakbonehastwocaptainsunderhis
command:OrdFirebeard(LGmalegolddwarfveteran)and
PerneSalhana(LGfemaleTethyrianhumanveteran).
Reportingtothemisafightingforcecomprisedofeight
veteransandtwenty-fourguards.Thisissupplementedbya
religiouscorpsofsixacolytesledbySisterCyas(LGfemale
ChondathanhumanpriestofHelm).Technically,thereligious
templarsarepartofthefightingforce,butinpractice,they
spendmostoftheirtimetendingthesickandwounded.Finally,
thefortissupportedbyaragtagtroopofChultanhuntersand
scoutsconsistingoffifteentribalwarriorsledbyLorsa
Bilwatal(CNfemaleChultanhumanscout)andNiles
Breakbone’slongtimefriend,WulfRygor(CGmalehalf-elf
scout).


1 .Boats
Althoughthecampgetsmuchofitsfoodbyhunting,itdepends
entirelyonrowboatsandcanoescominguptheRiver
Soshenstartobringreplacementsoldiers,armor,weapons,
arrowsandbolts,medicine,tents,cots,boots,clothing,and
justabouteverythingelse.AfterthedisasteratCamp
Righteous,CommanderBreakbonewouldliketohaveenough
boatsonhandtocarrymost,ifnotall,ofthegarrisontosafety
incasethecampisoverrun.That’sseldomthecase.


2 .Gatehouse
Thecampisringedbya 20 - foot-deepditchlinedwith
sharpenedstakesbackedbyastout, 12 - foot-highlogpalisade.
Thedepthoftheditchisn’tapparentbecauseit’sperpetually
filledwithmuddywater.Thespikesaretoobigtobeeffective
againstundeadbutthey’redangeroustoLargeandHuge
beasts.Thegatehouseisheavyenoughtowithstandacharging
triceratops,andthegatesareneveropenedwithoutan
expresscommandfromoneofthecamp’stopthreeofficers.
Thegatehouseconsistsoftheground-levelentryway,anupper
floorthatservesasanarmory(allofthegarrison’sspare
weaponsandarmorarestoredherebecauseit’soneofthefew
placesthatremainsreliablydry),andarooflessfighting
platformsurroundedbyapalisadethatgivesthree-quarters
coveragainstattacksmadefromtheground.Twoguardsare
stationedatopthegatehousedayandnight.
Therampartunderthepalisadeimpedesthecamp’s
drainage.Theentirecompoundisriddledwithpuddlesand
ankle-deepmud,whichmakeitabreedinggroundfor
mosquitoesandothervermin.


3 .Watchtowers
Eachwatchtowerhasadefendedtoplevel(providingthree-
quarterscover)thatloomsabovethecamppalisade.Alower
levelconsistsofawoodenfloorraisedseveralfeetabovethe
groundandenclosedwithacombinationofthinwoodand
canvastocreateareasonablydrylivingspace.LorsaBilwatal,
WulfRygor,andtheircadreofChultanscoutshavetheir
quartersintheselowerwatchtowerbillets.
Theoretically,eachwatchtowerisstaffedbytwoguards
dayandnight,butpersonnelshortagessometimesreducethat
tooneguardorforcetheknightstotaketurnsonwatch.


4 .AnimalPen
Theknightsbuiltthispenforswine,butthecampprovedtoo
unhealthyforthemandtheyalldied.Thecurrentlivestock
consistsoffoursicklygoats.


5 .FieldHospitalTents
ThesetentsarefilledwithsickanddyingsoldiersoftheOrder.
Atanygiventime,eachtentholds 2 d 6 patientssufferingfrom
arangeofmaladies.Theacolytestendingthesickare
themselvessoillandexhaustedthattheycan’tmakeeffective
useoftheirmagic.Anyhelpthecharactersprovideisgreatly
appreciated,especiallyiftheydonatepotionsofhealingor
othermagic.Ifcharactersprovidesubstantialmedicalaid,
SisterCyasbecomestheirstaunchdefenderagainst
CommanderBreakbone’sunreasonabledemands.
6 .CommandTent
CommanderBreakboneunderstandswarwellenoughwhenit
involvesbattlelines,wavingbanners,trumpets,andsupply
trains,butthiswarofambushandcreepingthroughthejungle
onlymystifiesandfrustrateshim.Hespendsmostofhistime
inhiscommandtent,poringoverinaccuratemapsand
reviewingreportsaboutthecamp’ssupplies.Histwo
immediatesubordinates,OrdFirebeardandPerneSalhana,do
acommendablejobofmanagingthecampintheabsenceof
effectiveleadershipfromBreakbone.
CommanderBreakbonehastwoimmediateproblems.If
charactersarrivedbyboat,heneedsthemtocarrymessages
andsevensicksoldiersdownrivertoPortNyanzaru.Each
soldiersissufferingfrommadmonkeyfever,shivering
sickness,orthroatleeches(see“Diseases”).Ifcharacters
arrivedonfoot,Breakboneinsiststhattheyleadadetachment
ofhissoldiers(consistingoffourguardsandfourtribal
warriors)onatwo-weekpatrolbackinthedirectionthey
camefrom;theirordersaretodestroyanyundeadthey
encounter.Ifeitherrequestisrefused,Breakboneordersthe
charactersarrestedandtiedhandandfootinseparateguard
towers,toawaittrialforinsubordinationduringamilitary
emergency.Ifthey’refoundguilty,thepenaltyistobestripped
ofallgear,tiedtotreesintheforest,andleftforthecarnivores
ortheundead.
Sufficientlypowerfulcharactersmightactuallywinafight
againsttheentirecamp,buteveniftheydo,they’llbemarked
fordeathbytheOrderoftheGauntletwherevertheygoin
Chult(andpotentiallyelsewhereintheRealms).Ifcharacters
escortedUndrilSilvertusktothecampandgainedherrespect
(see“SideQuests”),shewillintercedeontheirbehalfand
persuadeCommanderBreakbonetoletthecharactersgo.
Otherwise,they’llneedtowinoverbothOrdandPernewith
persuasiveargumentstoavoidBreakbone’sjudgment.Eachof
themcanbeswayedwithasuccessfulDC 15 Charisma
(Persuasion)check,butonlyifthecharactermakingthecheck
hasasoundcaseforleniency.
7 .Soldiers’Tents
Eachtentisintendedtohousefourpeopleinreasonable
comfort.Theyhavelogfloorstokeeptheoccupantsabovethe
mud,andreed-filledclothmattressesforsleepingon.Noneof
thematerial,however,issuitableforlong-termuseinChult.
Thecanvasisriddledwithmildewandfungus,dampness
quicklyseepsupthroughthefloors,andverminofevery
imaginablevarietythrivesinthemattresses.
8 .Latrines
AnywherebutChult,theselatrineswouldbeexcellent.Here,
dailyrainfloodsthepitsandflushestheircontentsthrough
thecamp.Asifthat’snotbadenough,thewoodenstructures
aresinkingintothesoftgroundaroundthepits,threateningat
anymomenttocollapseutterly.Mostsoldiersinthecamp
avoidthelatrinesandinsteadrelievethemselvesinthejungle
(iftheycanvolunteerforoutsideworkdetails)oroverthetop
