Thiskitchenservesthecampofficersandguests,andprepares
specialmealsduringfeasts.Theenlistedtroopsarelargely
responsibleforpreparingtheirownfoodbysquads;mostof
thatishandledinthebarracksarea.
SigbeornDunebar(NGmaleIlluskanhumanveteran)has
loggedmoreyearsinChultthananyotherlivingmemberof
theFlamingFist,andhelovesit.Whenhegrewtoooldfor
fightingandpatrollinginthejungle,hevolunteeredtotransfer
tothekitchen.Nowhe’snotonlytheheadcookbut,more
important,isresponsible(underthecastellan)forensuring
thefortalwayshasanadequatefoodsupply.

commandtoLiaraPortyr,andshe’sresponsibleforevery

breakstherules,Grutadecidesonthepunishment.Ifapatrol
isoverduefromthejungle,it’sherdutytofindoutwhy.When
strangersarrive,Grutaistheonewhogreetsthem,findsout

LiaraPortyr’stime.
ThischamberisGruta’soffice;hersleepingquartersare
upstairs.Herdutiestakeheralloverthefort,soshe’snotoften
hereduringtheday.Shecarriesonesetofkeystothelocked
storeroomdoors(area 10 G).

Thebelltowerrisesanother 10 feetabovethethatchedroofof
thebailey,makingit 30 feettalloverall.Inanormalday,the
bellisrungtwelvetimes:it’srungeveryfourhourstosignal
thechangeofwatch,andit’srung 10 minutesbeforeeachof
thosetosignalthatachangeofwatchisabouttooccur.Atthe
changeofthewatch,it’srunganumberoftimesequalingthe
numberofthewatch:onceatthestartofthefirstwatch,twice
atthestartofthesecondwatch,andsoforth.Onwhatthe
garrisoncalls“thewake-ups,”itringsonce.
Intheeventofacamp-widealarm,thebellisrung
continuouslyforatleastahalf-minute.Thetollingcanbe
heardfrom 2 milesawaybycreaturesintheopen,or 1 mileby
creaturesinthejungle.

Reservesofvitalsuppliesarekeptunderlockandkeyinthese
twochambers.Thedoortoeachroomislocked,andLiara
PortyrandGrutaHalsdottircarrytheonlykeys.Eachdooris
madeheavywoodreinforcedwithironbands(AC 17 , 20 hit
points,immunitytopoisonandpsychicdamage),anditslock
canbepickedwiththieves’toolsandasuccessfulDC 20
Dexteritycheck.
Thetypesofsuppliesstoredhereincludemundaneitems
suchaspaperandink,locks,clothing,boots,rope,lanterns,
lampoil,andcandles.
Treasure.Thesecondroomcontainsfourpotionsof
healing,fourspellscrolls(twoeachoflesserrestorationand
purifyfoodanddrink),five+ 1 arrowsinaquiver,andabowlof
commandingwaterelementals(toaidinanylast-ditchdefense
ofthefort).PortyrandHalsdottirdon’tblababoutthese
treasurestoadventurers,nomatterhowtrustworthythey
seem.

Thisreadyroomwasintendedtohouseasquadofsoldiers
assignedtoregularguarddutyinthebailey,butit’sbeentaken
overasquartersbySigbeornDunebar(seearea 10 D)and
threeotherveteranswhoserveascorporals(gauntlets)inthe
FlamingFistgarrison.

LiaraPortyrsleepsinthesouthernchamber,whileGruta
Halsdottirsleepsinthesmaller,southeasternchamber.Both
roomscontainbooks,clothes,andotherpersonaleffects.
Treasure.AcharacterwhosearchesunderthebedinLiara
Portyr’schamberfindsalockedironstrongbox.Acharacter
usingthieves’toolsandsucceedingonaDC 18 Dexteritycheck
canpopitopen.Theboxcontains 220 gpandasendingstone
thatLiarausestocommunicatewiththepiratesofJahaka
Anchorage.

FlamingFist,oranoblefromBaldur’sGate.Suchindividuals
arehousedinoneormoreofthesechambers.
Charactersmightbegiventheuseofoneormoreofthese
roomsiftheydosomethingtoearnthatprivilege.Examples
includeturningoveravaluablediscoverytotheFlamingFist,
leadingacounterattackagainstassaultingundead,orbringing
proofthattheydroveoffanincursionbyfrostgiants.HeartofUbtao
Amassivechunkofearthandrocktornfromtheearth
driftsovertheswampyforest,aboutahundredfeet
abovetheground.Apetrifiedtreetowersabovethe
stone,withitsstonerootsprotrudingfromthebottom.
Betweentheshapeoftherockandthebranchingofthe
tree’slimbs,itcreatestheimpressionofagigantic
stonehearthanginginthesky.Theimpressionisonly
mademoregruesomebytheredliquiddrippingfrom
theroots.Youseeacavemouthinthesideoftheslowlyrotating
“heart,”andastaircasewindingfromthecaveuptothe
flattenedtopwherethepetrifiedtreestands.The
staircasedefinitelyisn’tnatural;itwascarvedwithtools
intotherock.TheHeartofUbtao(map 2. 8 )isanearthmote—amassive
chunkofearthheldaloftbymagicthatcan’tbedispelled.It
hovers 200 feetabovethegroundandrotatesslowly
counterclockwise,completingonerevolutioneveryhour.
ChultanscallittheHeartofUbtaobecausetheearthmoteis
vaguelyheart-shaped,andthepetrifiedtreeaddsthe
impressionofveinsandarteries.Thedrippingredliquidis
rainwaterthatwasstainedbyfilteringthroughironore
depositsintherock.
Chultanswho’veseentheearthmotebelieveit’sactually
thepetrifiedheartofthegodUbtao,andtheyconsiderit
sacred.PriestsofUbtaousedtotravelhereonthebacksof
flyingdinosaurstoseekvisionsinsidetheheartandtobeseech
Ubtaotoreturn.ManyChultanswouldbeincensedtolearn
thattheHeartofUbtaohasbecomethelairofanundead
monster.
