theirstolencargoes.ShipsflyingtheensignofBaldur’sGate
areusuallyleftalone,asaconditionofPortyr’scooperation.
TheFlamingFistcommanderiskeptapprisedofupcoming
navalpatrolsoriginatingfromnationsonthemainland,and
shepassesthisinformationtothepiratesviaasendingstone.
EvenmorethantheirdealwithLiaraPortyr,thepirates’
mostimportantassetisthishiddenbase,andeverypirate
mustswearabloodoathtoprotectitssecretlocation.Anyship
thatsailswithinvisualdistanceoftheanchorageisattacked
andchased,ifnecessary.TheBrazenPegasus(see“Harbor
Ward")hasagoodchancetoescapebecauseshe’ssofast;
othershipsareunlikelytogetaway.
Anyonewhowandersintotheanchoragefromthejungle
orfromthebayisunlikelytobeallowedtoleave.Ifcharacters
stumbleintoJahakaAnchorage,thepiratesclaimit’satrading
postoranexploratorybaseestablishedbytheFlamingFistor
amerchantconsortium,andthey’llputupaconvincingfront
tothateffect.They’lldowhateverittakestogetstrangersoff
theirguard,thenkillorcapturethem.
Theroofofthecavelooms 60 feetabovethewater,on
average(thisvariesabitwiththetide).It’s 50 feetabove
groundleveland 20 feetabovethetopofthewatchtowerand
gantry.Twonaturalstonecolumnssitacrossthemouthofthe
inletwithonlya 25 - footgapbetweenthem,sothatshipsmust
becarefullytowedintothecavebysmallboatsand
maneuveredwithropesoncethey’reinside.
Thankstoitsshelteredpositionandtheperpetualmistin
thebay,thecaveisdifficulttofindunlessapersonknows
wheretolook.Analertlookoutspotsthestructuresand
dockedshipinsidethecaveautomaticallyifpassingwithina
half-mileofshore.Atadistanceupto 2 miles,asuccessfulDC
15 Wisdom(Perception)checkisneeded.Lookoutsatthe
anchoragenoticeashipwithin 2 milesautomatically.
Thepirates’firstlineofdefenseisaringofsubmerged
rocksaquarter-milefromshore.Thecaptainofashiptryingto
sailthoughmustmakeaDC 10 Intelligencecheck.Ifthecheck
succeeds,theshipgetspasttherockssafely.Ifitfailsby 4 or
less,theshipstrikesarockandspringsafewleaksbutsuffers
noseriousdamageandcancontinueseekingapassage
through.Ifthecheckfailsby 5 ormore,arockcauses
significantdamage;theshiplistsbadlyanditsspeedishalved
untilthehullisrepaired.Strikingathirdrockcausestheship
tosink.Thepirates,ofcourse,knowwheretherocksareand
avoidthem.
Thewatchtower(area 6 )andtheentireelevatedwalkway
fromthetowertothewarehouse(area 4 )havecrenelated
parapetsfordefense.Theseprovidehalfcover.

PIRATESOFJAHAKAANCHORAGE
ThreepirateshipsuseJahakaAnchorageasabase,and
theircaptainshaveforgedtenuousallianceswitheachother
andLiaraPortyrofFortBeluarian.Usethedeckplansin

pirateship,asneeded.Eachship’screwisdescribedbelow.
Dragonfang
CaptainElokJaharwon(NEmaleChultanhuman
wereboar)hasnopatienceorsenseofhumor.Hewasfirst
mateoftheDragonfanguntilayearago,whenhestageda
mutinyandhurledtheformercaptainoverboard.Theother
captainsarestilladjustingtotheirill-mannerednew
confederate,whoseemsintentonbullyinghiswaytoward
declaringhimselfkingofthepirates.
Elokwantstostopsendingasliceofthepirates’profitsto
FortBeluarian,whichwouldendthealliancewithLiaraPortyr
andprobablybeself-defeating;thepiratescouldkeepmoreof
theirprofit,butthey’dtakefewerprizesandincurmorerisk.
Theothercaptainsseethedisadvantagesclearly,butJaharwon
isbuildingafollowingamongtherank-and-filepiratesofall
threecrews.
TheDragonfang’screwincludesafirstmatenamedMad
Kalita(LEfemaleChultanhumanspy),fifteenChultanbandits,
threeChultanthugs,anda“seawitch”namedEyeoftheDeep
(NfemaleCalishitehumandruid).
EmeraldEye
ThecalculatingCaptainZaroumAl-Saryak(LEmale
Calishitehumanbanditcaptain)hasaspecialfondnessfor
gemstones.Hewearsacoatwithglitteringgemssewnintoit
( 750 gp)andwearsascimitarwithgemstonesembeddedin
thehilt( 1 , 250 gp).Hisship,theEmeraldEye,hascabins
decoratedlikeroomsinaCalishitepasha’spalace.Al-Saryakis
fondofchoppingofftheheadsofthosewhodispleasehimand
danglingthemfromhisship’smermaidfigurehead.Along-ago
injurycosthimhislefteyeandincisedascarintheformofa
largeXacrosshisface.Theruinedeyesocketnowholdsa
magicalgemthatallowsAl-Saryaktodiscernghostlypathways
leadingtotreasure.Thegemworksfornooneelse.Al-Saryak
holdsthesendingstonematchedtoLiaraPortyr’s(see“Fort
Beluarian”).
ThecrewoftheEmeraldEyeconsistsofafirstmatenamed
Voltan(CEmaleCalishitehumanberserker),twelveCalishite
bandits,twoCalishitethugs,andfiveChultantribalwarriors.
Stirge
CaptainLaskilar(NEmaleTethyrianhumanbanditcaptain
wearingacapeofthemountebank)isaflamboyant,rakish
piratewho’sgrowntiredofchasingmerchantshipsand
hearingtheircaptainswhineandpleadoverlostrevenuesand
spilledblood.He’dratherseeklosttreasuresandmagicitems,
butnotbydiggingintoruinsandtombs;instead,he’llhappily
pursueadventurersacrossjunglesandoceanstosteal
whateverhard-earnedplunderhebelievestheyhave.Hisship,
theStirge,isfilledwithscoundrelsandcutthroatseagertodo
hisdirtywork.Laskilaralsostaysincontactwithahostof
wealthypatronsinPortNyanzaruandmoredistantportswho
areeagertopayaking’sransomfortherarestofhisill-gotten
gains.
