reefsharksinhabitthewaterbelowthecage.Third,theonly
placeescapeescangoisthejungle,whichismorecruelthan
thepirates.
Whetheranyprisonersareinthecellwhencharacters
arriveatJahakaAnchorageisuptoyou,butit’sseldomempty.
Besidescaptivesailorsandmerchants,therecouldalsobe
Harpers,Zhents,oradventurers.Adventurersimprisonedhere
couldbemembersoftheSocietyofStalwartAdventurers,a
groupfromCormyrthatmapsunchartedplacesandhuntsfor
lostartifacts.CharacterswhohavenotyetencounteredArtus
CimberandDragonbaitmightfindthemhidingnearby,
plottingtofreetheprisoners.Asaformermemberofthe
SocietyofStalwartAdventurers,Artuswouldbemotivatedto
helpothersocietymembersinjeopardy.


6 .Watchtower
Thisramshacklewatchtowerstands 30 feetabove“dry”land.
It’ssurroundedbyacrenelatedparapetthatprovideshalf
covertodefenders.Aballistaisalsomountedonthetower.It
canbeusedagainstvesselsintrudingintheanchorage,butit’s
primarilyfordefenseagainstlargereptilesthreateningthe
junglewall(area 1 ).Twopirates(bandits)arealwaysonduty
atopthetower,andmorecomepouringoutofBosco’sBilge
(area 6 A)ifthebrassalarmbellisrung.Aspiralstaircase
carvedintoanearbypillarofrockallowsaccesstoBosco’s
Bilge.

Thisstructureisbuiltfromthehullofacapturedshipthatwas
tooslowtobeusedasapirateship,butithadonefinequality:
itdidn’tleak.Thepirateshauleditoutofthebay,hackedit
apart,andflippeditupsidedowntoformabuildingofsorts.
It’snowBosco’sBilge,anersatztaverncateringtotheoff-duty
piratecrewsrelaxingatJahakaAnchorage.Theroomcontains
benches,stools,andafewtablesonasandfloor.Itreeksof
spilledbeer,oldfood,andstaletobaccosmoke.
TheproprietorisBoscoDaggerhand(NEmalehumanthug
whowearsaringofanimalinfluence),socalledbecausehe
nevershakesanyone’shandwithouthisotherhandresting
threateninglyonthedaggerinhissash.Hekeepsasemi-tame
deinonychus(seeappendixD)asaguardanimal,whichhe
controlswithhismagicring.Thepiratesrefertotheraptoras
Knuckles—becausesomeonewho’sfoolishenoughtoletit
niptheirhandwon’thaveanythingelseleft.
Anytimeofthedayornight, 2 d 6 pirates(bandits)are
carousinginBosco’sBilge.Another 1 d 6 piratesarepassedout
onthetablesorfloor.


6 B.Kitchen
Bosco’scustomersaren’tveryinterestedinfood,butthe
simplefareheoffers—boiledshark,roastedsnake,andother
jungledelights—ispreparedhere.Whenleftoversbecomeso
rancidthepirateswon’teatthem,they’reeitherfedtothe
deinonychusorsenttothecaptivesinthecage(area 5 ).The
doortothekitchenisalwaysclosed,tokeepKnucklesfrom
raidingthepantry.


6 C.Bosco’sBunk
Bosco’sprivateroomcontainsahammock,alockedseachest
stuffedwithclothesandtrinkets,afewmustybooks,andapile
ofreedsforKnucklestosleepon.Boscocarriesthekeytothe


chest,orthelockcanbepickedwiththieves’toolsanda
successfulDC 15 Dexteritycheck.
Treasure.Afalsebottomintheseachestcanbefound
withasuccessfulDC 12 Wisdom(Perception)check.The
compartmentholds 58 gp, 140 sp,apotionofwaterbreathing,
andthreeblackeyepatches.(Thepiratecaptainsdontheeye
patchesbeforetryingtoremovetreasurefromarea 4 .)

Pirateshipsenterandleavethisbayastheycomeandgofrom
JahakaAnchorage.TheRiverTathplungesdownmultiple
waterfallsbeforespillingintothebay,somistperpetually
driftsoutoftherivermouthandacrossthebay.Thismistisn’t
especiallyheavybutitseffectaccumulatesoverdistance,soit
restrictsvisibilitytoafewmilesonallbutthewindiestdays.
Theoutlineofthecoastalmountainscanbeseenfromany
distanceinthebay,butfinerdetails—somethingthesizeofa
shiporsmaller,forexample—can’tbediscernedfrommore
than 2 or 3 milesdistant.Sincethebayisabout 20 mileswide
and 40 milesdeep,it’sanexcellenthidingspotforpirates.Any
shipthatwandersintothebaywithoutknowingprecisely
wheretolookisunlikelytostumbleuponJahakaAnchorage.

Anancientmonasteryoverlooksthejunglefromits
perchonthecliffofatallplateau.Stonestepsand
ricketywalkwaysconnectthevariousbuildings,the
lowestofwhichis 500 feetabovetheground.Themain
buildinghasacircularmazelikesymbolcarvedintoits
crumblingfacade.
Everyfewminutes,birdfolkeitherlandatthe
monasteryorlaunchthemselvesfromitsbalconiesand
taketothesky.

KirSabal(map 2. 11 )ishometoaflockofaarakocraanda
peacefulsanctuarywhereheroescanfindrestandsafety—if
theycanreachit.Theaarakocraarealsoshelteringthelast
humandescendantsoftheroyallineofOmu.Ifthecharacters
eventuallyliberateOmufromtheevilpossessingit,theroyal
linecanberestored.
Originally,themonasterystructurescouldbereachedby
ascendingapaththatcombinednaturalstoneramps,stepscut
intothecliffface,andwoodenwalkwaysbuiltontothecliff.
Therampsandstepsarestillmostlyintact,butthewooden
walkwaysarerottingormissingentirelyinmanyplaces.The
aarakocradon’tneedthemandhavenoreasontorepairthem.
Toreachthemonasteryfromtheground,acharactermust
makethreeabilitychecks.Eachtimeacheckfails,the
charactermustchoosebetweeneithertaking 10 ( 3 d 6 )
bludgeoningdamagefromafallorgaining 1 levelof
exhaustion(whichmeansdisadvantageonfurtherability
checks).Thethreeabilitychecksareasfollows:
