ThegargoylesofOmuandtheaarakocraofKirSabalare
bitterenemies.Aarakocrascoutswatchoverthedistantcity,
andtheirbrazenintrusionannoysthegargoyles.Onceina
while,gargoylesfollowapatrolbacktoKirSabalandattack
themonastery.Ifthishappenswhilethecharactersarevisiting
KirSabal,theaarakocraappreciatewhateverhelptheparty
canprovide.Theattackingforceconsistsoftengargoyles.Ifsix
ormoreareslain,therestflybacktoOmu..


1 .Monastery
Sixaarakocrainhabitthemonastery,livingasmonks.While
inthemonastery,theywearprayerbeadnecklacesandpaint
labyrinthinepatternsontheirbeaks,hands,andfeet.
Alarge,circularlabyrinthsymbolofUbtaoispaintedon
thefaceofthisbuilding,butitcan’tbeseenfromanywherein
KirSabal;it’svisibleonlyfromtheairorfromtheground
below.
1 A.Refectory.
Theentrancehallofthemonasteryisalsothediningchamber.
Theaarakocramonkstakealltheirmealshere,butit’salso
wheremeetingstakeplace.Theaarakocrausebackless
benchesandstoolsforseats,toaccommodatetheirwings.The
tablecanseattwenty.


1 B.PrayerHall.
Thisisthemainhallofthemonastery,andit’sanimpressive
sight.Theraftersoftheceilingarefully 60 feetabovethefloor,
andthepeakofthethatchedroofis 15 feetabovethat.The
spaceislargeenoughthataarakocracanflyinsideit,though
theyseldomdoforthesakeofdecorum.
ThecircularlabyrinthsymbolofUbtaoislaidoutonafloor
mosaic 25 feetindiameter.Theaarakocramonksspendmuch
oftheirdaysmeditatingwhileviewingthelabyrinthfromthe
lowerandupperlandingsofthestaircase.Otheraarakocra
comehereonlyonspecialoccasionssuchasweddings,
funerals,andholydays.


1 C.Masters’Quarters.
Theaarakocramonksusethesesleepingchambers.Each
chambercontainsabunkbedandasmalltableforacandle
andwashbasin.Themonkshavenopossessions;eventheir
clothesandprayerbeadsbelongtothemonastery.


1 D.Antechamber.
Beforeenteringtheshrine,themonkspreparethemselvesin
thisantechamberbywashingwithscentedoils,readingfrom
inspirationalscrolls,andpaintinglabyrinthinepatternsonto
theirbeaks,hands,andfeet.


1 E.Shrine.
Alife-sizewoodenstatueofanobletabaxistandsagainstthe
farwall,drapedinflowersandbeadsandwreathedinincense
smoke.UnliketheotherstatuesinKirSabal,thisoneisin
excellentcondition,thoughit’sstillveryold.Itcanbe
recognizedasaportrayalofUbtaointabaxiformwitha
successfulDC 15 Intelligence(Religion)check.Theaarakocra
don’tknowthestatueasUbtao;theyrevereitsimplyasa
talismanthatsafeguardsKirSabalandasafocusfor
meditation.


1 F.TrainingHall.
Theaarakocramonksusethishallforinstructionin
meditationandmartialarts.Itcontainsnofurnitureexcept
wovengrassmats.


2 .CleansingChambers
Aarakocrarituallycleansethemselvesinthisbuildingbefore
visitingthemonastery.Thisisalsowheretheyleaveofferings
forTeacherandtheirmysteriousguardianfigure(thestatues
ofUbtaoasatabaxi).
2 A.Washroom.
Thelowerchambercontainsawashbasinforperforming
ablutionsandsmallervesselsofsalt,powderedchalk,andgold
dust( 50 gpworth)forsprinklingontoone’sfeathersbefore
visitingthemonastery.
2 B.Shrine.
Theupperchambercontainsawoodencasewithshelvesof
candlesandheadscarvesforvisitorstothemonastery.Atthe
eastendofthechamberisa 5 - foot-tallwoodenstatuewith
flowersandofferingsoffoodplacedatitsfeet.Thestatueis
obviouslyveryold,andit’swornalmostsmoothbythousands
ofhandsbrushingagainstit,soit’simpossibletodetermine
whatitoriginallyportrayed.Offeringsleftherearepickedup
dailybyAsharra’sservantandplacedonthestatuesinthe
monasteryortheelder’shouse.
3 .Elder’sHouse
Asharraandanelderlyfemaleaarakocraservantnamed
Yingmatona(pronouncedying-mah-TOE-nah)liveinthis
grandstructure.Nootheraarakocraeversetfootinside.
Mwaxanarévisitsoccasionally,andonlyNaisallowedtocome
andgoashepleases.Thisbuildingisoff-limitstothe
charactersunlessthey’reinvitedinside.Trespassinginthe
Teacher’shomeisahorrendousbreachofhospitality.
3 A.Shrine.
Thelowerfloorofthehouseisasingleroom.Yingmatona
sleepsonamattressunderthestairs.Alife-sizewoodenstatue
resemblingatabaxistandsoppositethedoor.Flowersand
offeringsoffoodareplacedatitsfeet.Thestatueisobviously
veryoldandcarvedinthestylizedChultanmanner,soa
successfulDC 15 Intelligence(Religion)checkisneededto
recognizeitasadepictionofUbtaoasatabaxi.Thisrealization
isautomaticifsomeonealreadyfigureditoutinthemonastery.
Thewallsofthechamberbearfadedfrescoesoffloral
designsand—somewhatjarringly—mathematicalsymbols.
Asectionoffloorhascollapsedfromage.Anythingfalling
throughplungeshundredsoffeettotherocksbelow.
3 B.Asharra’sQuarters.
Theupperfloorisdecoratedwithfrescoessimilartothoseon
thelowerfloor.Thelandingatopthestairshasnowindows,
beingsetinsidethecliff,butit’sdimlylitbytwocandles(one
ateachendofthehallway).
Theouterroomisalibrarywithasinglebookcaseholding
forty-fourancientbooks.Nalikestocomehereandreadthe
books,noneofwhichismagical.Theycovermostareasof
knowledge:mathematics,naturalphilosophy,geography,
fabulouscreatures,theology,andsoforth.Allthebooks
predatetheSpellplague,solittleusefulinformationabout
Chultcanbegleanedfromthem.
TheinnerroomisAsharra’spersonalchamber.Itcontains
acomfortablebed,anightstand,afewbooksofChultanpoetry,
andawardrobeholdingeverydayandceremonialclothing.
Underthebedisasmall,closedboxholdingfourpotionsof
poisonthatareeasilymistakenforpotionsofhealing.Asharra
mightresorttotheseifthecharacters’presenceinKirSabal
becomesinconvenient.
