Throughsomemagicalmishap,aseafaringgalleoncalled
theNarwhalendedupintheheartofthejungle.Itliesupside
down,itshullencrustedwithbarnaclesandovergrownwith
ivy.Thecrewisgonewithoutatrace,buttheoldshipstillhas
occupants:areclusiveweretigerandasmalltribeof
vegepygmiesshareit.Sincetheweretigerkillsmorethanhe
eatsandleavesthesurplusforthevegepygmies,thetiny
communitygetsalongfine.Thevegepygmiesthriveinthe
damp,darkareaundertheshipandinitshold,whilethe
weretigerlivesmoreelegantlyintheairy,well-furnished
(albeitupsidedown)captain’scabin.
Thevegepygmytribeconsistsofavegepygmychief,
twelvevegepygmies,andthreethornies(seeappendixDfor
thevegepygmies’andthornies’statistics).Theweretiger(N
maleChultanhuman)usesnonameanymore,buthewas
calledBwayesO’tamuyearsago.HeisacousinofWakanga
O’tamu(see“MerchantPrinces”),andthetwowerequite
closeaschildren.Thefamilyresemblanceisstrong;characters
who’vemetWakangaseethesimilaritywhentheweretiger
assumeshumanform.TheweretigerspeaksCommonand
Vegepygmy,thoughhe’sforgottenmuchoftheformerthrough
disuse.
WhencharactersenterthesamehexastheNarwhal,roll
anydie.Onanoddresult,Bwayesisouthuntingand
automaticallydetectsthecharacters’presencebeforethey’re
awareofhim;onanevenresult,Bwayesisrestingatthehull,
meaningcharactersarelikelytoencounterthevegepygmies
beforetheweretiger.IfBwayesdetectsthecharacters,he
tracksthemcovertly,outofcuriosityratherthanbloodlust.
He’dliketomeetthemandfindoutwhatthey’reafter.He’ll
evenbringthembacktotheshipandtradegemsforwine,if
theyhaveany.Unlessthecharactersareaccompaniedby
Bwayes,thevegepygmiesarehostiletowardthem.
