axesbutgaveupaftermakinglittleheadway.
Theaxemarksareonlyafewfeetofftheground(having
beenmadebykobolds).Thedoorcanbeforcedopenwitha
successfulDC 10 Strength(Athletics)check.
Dozensofcratesandbarrelsarestackedinside.Several
havebeentoppledoverbytreerootsgrowingbeneaththem.
Storedfoodandwaterisinedible,buttheothersuppliesare
mostlystillusable,eveniftheywon’tbeespeciallyusefulto
adventurers.Theyconsistoftoolsformining,stone-working,
andiron-working,shovels,lanternsandcandles,miners’
helmets,heavygloves,sparewheels,axles,andbrakesforore
carts,grease,thickrope,tar,brushes,brooms,andsoforth.

Anorecartsitsonthetracksattheentrancetothe
mine,heldinplacebyablockunderthewheels.
Thecart’smetalboxisstillsolid,butoneoftheaxlesis
brokenandtheotherscreecheshorribly.Thesupplyshed
(area 3 )containsthepartsandgreasetogetitrollingagain.
Theoldbrakelookssolid,buteachtimeit’sused,ithasa 10
percentchancetofailutterly.Thisriskisrecognizedby
someonewhoinspectsthebrakeandmakesasuccessfulDC 10
Intelligencecheck.Thebrakecanberepairedwithspareparts
fromthesupplyshed.
4 .UpperShaft
Insidethemine,thecaveopensintoanenormous, 250 - foot-
deeppit.Thedwarvesleftastoutstonecolumninthemiddle
tosupporttheroof,andtheybuiltawoodenwalkwaytospan
thepitfromsouthtonorth.Despitemanybrokenormissing
planks,thewalkwayisfundamentallysolid.Tracksfortheore
cartsdescendaroundthewallsofthepitinaclockwisefashion.
Enoughdaylightfiltersthroughthemineopeningtocreate
dimilluminationtothebottomoftheshaft.
Thekoboldslivingintheminebelieve(correctly)thatthis
upperlevelishauntedbydwarvenspirits.Thekoboldsavoid
theupperlevelofthemineexceptwhentheymustexitor
enter.Theyusethewoodenbridgeexclusivelyandneverwalk
alongthecarttrackpastarea 5.
5 .HauntedForge
Thiswasthedwarves’forgeandworkshop.Manyofthe
minersretreatedherewhenTinderattacked,butthedragon
incineratedtheirbarricadesandthenburnedthemoutwith
herbreath.Theentireareafromthebottomofthestepstothe
backsofthechambersisscorchedandblack.Adozenormore
(it’sdifficulttosortthemout)charredskeletonslitterthe
chambers.Onedwarfskeletonismorerecentthantheothers
(thebodyhasbeendeadforthreeyears)andnotcharred;it
liesnearthebaseofthesteps,inaface-down,head-down
positionthatimpliesthedwarfdiedwhilescramblingdown
thesteps.ThiswasamemberofHewHackinstone’sexpedition
whofellvictimtothehauntedforge.
