Flankingtheentrancearetwostonemonoliths,eachone 15
feettallanddrapedinvines.Characterswhoexaminethe
carvingsuncoveraninscriptionwritteninOldOmuan:
“Shagambiteachesustofightevilwithhonor.”Reliefsonthe
monolithsshowShagambioverseeingChultanwarriorsas
theytrainwithspearsandswords.
Thedoortotheshrineisnotlocked,butithangsheavyon
itshinges.Itweighs 600 pounds,sooneormorecharacters
musthaveacombinedStrengthscoreof 20 orhighertopushit
open.


4 B.ArenaGallery
Whenoneormorecharactersentertheshrine,read:


Stepsdescendintoafifteen-foot-high,moss-covered
room.FourstatuesofOmuanwarriorsstandinalcoves
toeitherside,overlookingabarredgladiatorialpitinthe
floor.Eachstatuelookslikeitwasmeanttoholda
spear,butitsweaponismissing.Onthefarsideofthe
chamber,astonepedestalstandsconspicuouslybare.A
reliefonthewallbehinditshowsamonstrousjaguar
withsixsnakesprotrudingfromitsshoulders,fighting
offasquat,frog-likehumanoidarmedwithaspear.To
theleftofthereliefisanarrowtunnelwithstairsleading
down.

Thestatuescan’tbemovedfromtheiralcoves,andthey
areimpervioustodamageandspells.Thetunnelinthenorth
wallslopesdowntothebottomofthegladiatorialpit(area 4 D)
andleadstoacellblockbeyond(area 4 C).
ThewallreliefdepictsShagambi(akamadan)fighting
Nangnang(agrung).Justbelow,aninscriptionwritteninOld
OmuantellsthestoryofhowNangnangstoleShagambi’sspear
(see“LegendoftheNineGods”).WithasuccessfulDC 15
Wisdom(Perception)check,acharacternoticestinyholesin
therelief.Stuffingtheholeswithclothorwaxpreventsthe
poisongasfrompenetratingthroughwhenthepedestalis
disturbed(seebelow).
Pedestal.Thepedestalisa 4 - foot-highstonecylinderthat
isimpervioustodamageandspells.Closeinspectionrevealsa
stonehatchinthetopofit.Anyphysicalattempttoforceopen
thehatchreleasesacloudofgasthroughtheholesinthewall
relief.Thegasfillsa 15 - footcubedirectlyinfrontofthemural.
CreaturesintheareamustmakeaDC 12 Constitutionsaving
throw,taking 14 ( 4 d 6 )poisondamageonafailedsavingthrow,
orhalfasmuchdamageonasuccessfulone.Thegasaffectsa
creatureevenifitholdsitsbreathordoesn’tneedtobreathe.
Thegasdoesn’tlinger.
PuzzleCube.ToobtainShagambi’spuzzlecube,the
charactersmustobtainthefourbronzespearsfromthe
monstersinarea 4 Candplacetheweaponsinthehandsofthe
fourwarriorstatues.Onlybydefeatingthemonstersinthe
gladiatorialpitcanthespearsbeobtained.Whenallfour
spearsareplacedinthehandsofthestatues,read:


Thepedestalbeginstoturnonthespot,andanornate
stonecubecorkscrewsupfromahatchinitstop.

Onceitrisesupoutofthepedestal,Shagambi’spuzzlecube
canbesafelyremoved.


4 C.GladiatorCells
Thishallwaycontainsfourcrampedcellsbehindiron
portcullises.Theportcullisesarelockedinplaceandcanbe
raisedonlywithaknockspellorbysteppingonthepressure


plateinarea 4 D.EachcellcontainsaChultangladiatormadeof
paintedclay.Eachgladiatorisagolem-likecreaturewitha
bronzespearinonehandandawoodenshieldintheother.It
hasthestatisticsofagladiator,withthesechanges:
 Theclaygladiatorisanunalignedconstructwithan
ArmorClassof 17 (natural,shield).
 Ithasaclimbingspeedof 30 feetandcanclimbdifficult
surfaces,includingupsidedownonceilings,without
needingtomakeanabilitycheck.
 Itisimmunetopoisondamageaswellasthecharmed,
frightened,andpoisonedconditions.Itdoesn’tneedto
eat,drink,sleep,orbreathe.
 Itdoesn’tspeak.
 Itcan’tmakerangedattacks,anditcan’tbedisarmed.
Aclaygladiatorfightsifattackedorwhencalledtothe
gladiatorialpit(area 4 D).Ifreducedto 0 hitpointsoutsideof
thegladiatorialpit,thegladiatordisappearsalongwithits
possessions,reappearsinitscellatfullhealthwithspearand
shieldinhand,andreturnstothegladiatorialpitifitcan.If
defeatedinthegladiatorialpit,thegladiatorleavesitsspear
behindbeforereforminginitscell.Thespearcanthenbe
takenbacktoarea 4 B.Iftakenfromtheshrine,thespear
disappearsandreappearsinthegladiator’shand.
Thegladiatorscangoanywhereintheshrinebutcan’t
leaveit.Whentheshrinehasnoothercreaturesinsideit,the
gladiatorsreturntotheircells,andtheportcullisesdrop
behindthem.
4 D.GladiatorialPit
Thispitis 20 feetdeep,anditsbarsarespaced 2 feetapart.A
Mediumorsmallercreaturecaneasilyslipbetweenthebars,
butthewallsofthepitaretoosmoothtoclimbwithouttheaid
ofclimbinggearormagic.
Six-foot-higharchwaysstandoppositeoneanotheratthe
bottomofthepit,thefloorofwhichisonelargepressureplate.
Applying 50 poundsormoretothefloorcausesthe
portcullisesinarea 4 Ctorisewithaloudclatter,whereupon
theclaygladiatorsemergefromtheircellsandquicklymake
theirwaytothepit.

5 .GreatRift


Tumbledownruinsclingtothelipofariftoverlookinga
lakeofbubblinglava.

Acreaturethatfallsfromthetopofthecliffintothelava
takes 70 ( 20 d 6 )bludgeoningdamagefromthefalland 55
( 10 d 10 )firedamagefromthelava.Acreaturethatstartsits
turninthelavatakesthefiredamageagain.
SacrificeofFire
Thefirsttimethecharactersarrive,theyencounterasmall
vegepygmytribepreparingtosacrificeagrung(seeappendix
D)totherift.Thegrung,Imbok,isboundwithvinesand
restrained.Asthegrungstruggles,thevegepygmiesencircle
himandperformastrange,ritualisticdance.Unlessthe
charactersintervene,thevegepygmiesrolltheircaptiveoffthe
edgeofthecliff.Acoupleofvegepygmiesleapoffafterhim,
caughtinthethroesofdevotion.
Thetribeconsistsofonevegepygmychief,eight
vegepygmies,andthechief’sthornypet.Statisticsforall
thesecreaturesappearinappendixD.Theirgrungcaptiveis
thebelovedonehundredandeightiethsonofthegrung
chieftainYorb.IfthecharactersfreeImbok,hegrovelsattheir
feet.Hedoesn’tspeakCommonbutpromisestoburyhis
benefactorsingoldiftheyescorthimbacktohisfather’s
