Thissection contains statblocksandshort descriptions for
the creaturesthatappear in Lost Mine of Phandelver.

Statistics

A creature's statblockprovides the essentialinformation
thatyou,as the DM,needto runthe creature.

SIZE
Each creature takes up a different amount of space. The
Size Categories tableshowshowmuch space a creature
of a particular sizecontrols in combat. Objectssometimes
usethe samesizecategories.

SPACE
A creature's space is the areain feetthatit effectively
controls in combat, not an expressionof its physical
dimensions. A typical Mediumcreature isn't5 feetwide,
for example, but it doescontrola space thatwide.If a
Mediumhobgoblin stands in a 5-foot-widedoorway, other
creatures can'tget throughunless the hobgoblinletsthem.

SQUEEZING INTO A SMALLER SPACE
A creature cansqueeze through a space large enough for
a creature onesizesmaller thanitself.Whensqueezing
through sucha space, the creature'sspeed is halved.
While squeezing, a creature hasdisadvantage on attack
rollsandDexterity savingthrows, andattack rollsagainst
it haveadvantage.

TYPE
A creature's typespeaks to its fundamental nature.
Thefollowing types of monsters canbe encountered in
thisadventure.
Aberrations. Utterlyalienbeings thathaveno placein the
natural world.
Beasts. Nonhumanoid creatures that,likereal-world
animals, are a normalpartof the world'secology.
Dragons. Large,winged, reptilian creatures of ancient
origin andtremendous power.
Giants. Humanoid-like creatures thattoweroverhumans
andtheir kin.
Humanoids. Bipedal peoples of the civilizedandsavage
world,including humans anda tremendous variety of
other races, including dwarves andelves.
Monstrosities. Frightening creatures thatsometimes
resemble beasts but thatare oftentouched by magicand
almost neverbenign.
Oozes. Gelatinous creatures thatgenerally haveno fixed
shape. Theyare mostlysubterranean, dwelling in caves
anddungeons.
Plants. Plant creatures, as opposed to ordinary plants,
havesome degree of sentienceandmobility.

Undead. Once-living creatures brought to a horrifying
state of undeaththrough the practiceof necromantic
magic or someunholy curse.

TAGS
A creature mighthaveoneor moretagsappended to
its type,in parentheses. Forexample, an ore hasthe
humanoid (orc)type.These parenthetical tagsprovide an
additional layerof categorizationfor certainmonsters, but
theyhaveno bearing on howa monster is used in combat.

ALIGNMENT
A creature's alignment provides a clueto its disposition.
Forexample, a chaotic evilcreature might be difficultto
reason withandmight attackcharacters on sight,whereas
a neutral creature mightbe willing to negotiate. Alignment
indicates whether a creature leanstoward lawor chaos
andgoodor evilor whethera creature is neutral.
AnyAlignment.Some creatures, suchas the warrior,
canhaveanyalignment. In otherwords, youchoose the
creature's alignment. Depending on the creature,its
alignment entrymightindicate a tendency or aversion
toward law,chaos, good,or evil.
Unaligned.Manycreatures of lowintelligence haveno
comprehension of lawor chaos, goodor evil.Theydon't
makemoral or ethical choices, but ratheract on instinct.
These creatures are unaligned, which means theydon't
havean alignment.

ARMOR CLASS
A creature thatwears armor or carries a shieldhasan AC
thattakes its armor,shield, andDexterity intoaccount.
Otherwise, a creature's AC is basedon its Dexterity
modifier andanynatural armor or supernatural resilience
it might possess.
If a creature wears armor or carries a shield,the kindof
armor it wearsor shieldit carries is notedin parentheses
afterits AC value.

HIT POINTS
A creature usually diesor is destroyedwhen its hit points
dropto O. For moreon hit points, see the rulebook.

SPEED
A creature's speed tellsyouhowfar it canmoveon its turn.
Formore information on speed,see the rulebook.
All creatureshavea walking speed; creatures that
haveno form of ground-based locomotion have a
speed of 0 feet.
Manyof the creaturesherein haveoneor more
additional movement modes.
Climb.A creature thathasa climbing speed canuseall
or part of its movementto moveon verticalsurfaces. The
creature doesn't need to spend extra movement to climb.
Fly.A creature thathasa flyingspeed canuseall or part
of its movementto fly. If the creatureis incapacitated or
knocked pronewhile flying,it fallsunless it canhover.
Swim.A creature thathasa swimming speed doesn't
need to spendextra movement to swim.
