The surface area    of  the original    cube    is  6   ×   4   ×   4   =   96. The surface area    of

one of  the smaller cubes   is  6   ×   2   ×   2   =   24. There   are eight   small   cubes,  so

their   combined    surface area    is  8   ×   24  =   192.    The difference  is  192 –   96  =

96.
