The graph shows three points that represent solutions to the equation y
= f(x): (−2, 0), (2, 0), and (0, −4). The first point satisfies choices (B), (C),
(D), and (E). The second point satisfies all the answer choices. The point
(0, −4), however, satisfies only choices (B) and (E). How can you decide
between those choices? Think about some other point on the graph.
What about when x = 3?

Then, according to choice (B), y would be (3)^2 − 4 = 5 while according to
(E), y would be −|(3)^2 − 4| = −5.

You can see from the graph that when x = 3, y is negative, so the only
choice that fits is (E).
