or an extravagant zoom range
without an exorbitant price tag,
Sigma’s 18-300mm is the best
buy for Canon, Pentax and Sony
A-mount bodies. It doesn’t have a very
refined autofocus system, but it packs a
punch in both telephoto reach and image
quality. The optical stabilizer works well
in the Canon and Nikon versions, but is
omitted in the Pentax and Sony editions.
For Nikon DX format cameras, we prefer
Nikon’s own 18-200mm VR, which has
excellent handling characteristics and
all-round performance. There’s a lot to be
said for the own-brand Canon 18-135mm
lens as well, with its pleasing image quality,
tricked-up Nano USM autofocus system
and effective stabilisation.
The Sigma and Tamron 18-200mm
lenses are both compact and give decent
image quality, but the Tamron is remarkably
inexpensive. The bigger Tamron 18-400mm
is only really worth considering if extra-long
telephoto reach is top of your wish list.
