A puffin stretches out its wings in
flight, beating them at up to 400
beats a minute. A 1/1,600 sec
shutter speed freezes the action.

Our pro’s typical settings and screens for video success

Every DSLR is different in terms of its video features, but it’s important to set your camera up before you start recording

1 MOVIE QUALITY
The Nikon D810 menu
offers Matt High and Normal
quality video settings. “I set it to
High quality, which takes up more
memory but is less compressed.”
(Quality is his first priority.)

2 WHITE BALANCE
“We set a manual white
balance and choose the colour
temperature, so that every clip is
visually consistent, and requires
less colour grading. This should
save us some editing time later.”

3 FRAME RATE AND SIZE
The duo tend to choose a
frame rate of 60fps when filming.
“This makes for smoother footage,
epic when it's slowed down. It can
also help when filming handheld
work, so that it's less juddery.”
