Chasing waterfalls

Given the right location, Lauren Scott
shows you how easy it is to use ND filters
and capture slow-mo watery scenes

lowing down water
motion with a
neutral-density
filter is nothing
new... but it’s one
of those quintessential landscape
techniques that’s always good to
have a grip on. The skills you
need – learning to balance and
calculate exposures and focus
before adding a filter – can
come in handy for a whole host
of other projects and scenarios.
Getting silky-smooth water
shots is challenging, but having
the right equipment helps. In
your kit bag, it goes without
saying that you’ll need an ND
filter to limit the light entering

the lens and allow for long
exposures to be set. I tried out
a screw-on filter to avoid the faff
of holders. At extended shutter
speeds, a decent, sturdy tripod,
and remote cable release are also
a must to keep everything sharp.
For this project, lens choice
is likely to be dictated by your
location. At the beautiful Sgwd-
y-Eira waterfall in Wales, I had
a 16-85mm lens to hand, which
gave me a good focal range to
compose scenes with. While a
zoom lens enables you to fill the
frame with water features from
a distance, a wide-angle is your
best bet if the falls are smaller or
you’re closer to them...
