The world from above

National newspaper photographer Chris Gorman shows how he produces amazing
drone images of Britain, showcasing the country from an all new perspective

hris Gorman’s drone work
has been published everywhere
from Britain to America,
Australia and New Zealand.
A photographer with 30 years’ experience,
he has embraced the world of drone
photography and fuses his knowledge
of current affairs with a sharp eye for
landscape photography.
“I was aware that in this day of disposable
photography –where everyone carries a
phone and everything has been shot a

thousand times over – I needed something
to make my images stand out to picture
desks,” Chris says. “Drone photography
was the obvious answer.”
“As a picture editor, I know that newspaper
desks receive well over 40,000 images
a day, so making your images stand out
is vital. I try and choose news events or
stunning landmarks that everyone knows,
then mix them with unusual light, a sunrise
or sunset, mist or even a night shot. It is
vital that the image is different from anything

that has been done before, but with a
drone you are already ahead of the game.
“This image of Shipley Windmill was taken
at dawn, on one of the foggiest mornings
I’ve experienced. I already had my location
in mind before setting out, but I initially
thought the fog was too thick for it to work.
30 minutes after sunrise, the warm sun
started to burn it off to create this dreamy
look. The sudden appearance of a flock
of birds added to the shot.”
