hen you happen upon
a beautiful scene, you
want to find the right
composition, have perfect
light and make the image
as technically perfect as possible, while
maintaining your artistic vision. A lot
of this you cannot control, like the
weather and light, or if elements within
the frame will align for the perfect
composition. One thing you can control
is the technical execution of the image,

such as exposure and depth of field.
The latter is the trickier of the two.
For scenes with a single subject, depth
of field isn’t an issue, but if you have
a scene that requires sharpness both
in the immediate foreground and in
the far-distant background, focus
stacking may be the answer.
I used this method on my image
from Death Valley National Park. I was
exploring the vast salt pans and came
across an area of intricate cracked mud,
