Experiment with twisting the lens barrel
during an exposure for spectacular effects

Digital cameras have ushered in an age of
pin-sharp pictures. Ever-more effective
autofocus systems mean that soft-looking
images often betray poor technique. But
zoom blur (twisting the lens barrel while shooting) can
give a very distinctive look and make the viewer feel
like they’re actually moving through the image.
Zoom blur is simple: all you need is a zoom lens and
a low shutter speed, such as 1/30 sec. Press the shutter
release button while simultaneously zooming the lens
in or out: each method will produce a separate effect,
so experiment and decide which one you like best. Keep
the subject you’re photographing in mind – only the
centre of the image will be in focus while you frame up.

How to get the shot...
Slow shutter speeds of at least 1/30 second mean
that light is the biggest problem to overcome
Use your lens’s maximum aperture value,
for example f/22, and keep ISO values low
If you’re shooting outside, try this technique on
overcast or cloudy days to manage the light levels

Refresh your portraits by focusing on other
parts of the face – or covering up the eyes

The eyes are an element it makes sense for
the camera to focus on in portraiture. But
why not totally disregard this rule to come
up with portraits with a difference – ones
that will really make an impression? There are many
different parts of your subject’s face to focus on instead

  • the nose or mouth, for example – especially if you
manipulate depth of field to defocus the eyes.
As with the image opposite, you could even cover
the face and home in on something completely
different. For this playful shot, the abundance of
hair over our model’s face means that all we can
see of her are her lips and nose – and a mysterious
expression that invites a second or third look.

How to get the shot...
Find another point of interest to focus on – your
model’s hair pulled over her face, for example
Use a wider aperture for a shallow depth of
field to make the effect more pronounced
If shooting indoors, or in low light, put the camera
on a tripod and lower the ISO for more image detail
