Learn to play with negative space for more creative framing

To prolong the fleeting
moment captured in a
shot like this, the moving
subject needs an area to
move into. This is defined as ‘active
space’. Here, though, the dust trail
behind the cyclist creates a sense of

motion, but the framing doesn’t
give him anywhere to move into. The
picture is therefore not about where
the rider is going, but where he has
come from. Inverting negative space
like this can be an effective way of
adding interest to moving subjects.
