Dear Diary,
It is 1940, and I am a Jewish teenager
living in Poland. I am 14. I am
extremely frightened by some of the talk
that I have heard about Adolf Hitler
and his plan to exterminate the Jewish
population. My parents have tried to
calm my fears. They tell my brother
and me that the world is too civilized
for such a thing to happen, and that it
would be impossible for Hitler to wipe
out an entire population of people.
Despite their attempts to make me feel
better, I remain frightened. Why must I
wear a yellow armband with the Star
of David? I do not want attention

drawn to me. I am Polish, just like all of
the other kids in my class. It is not fair
to be considered different. Some of my
friends no longer speak to me.
I am fortunate to have you, my diary
friend, to confide in. I would go mad if I
had to keep all of my emotions bottled up
inside any longer. I do not know whom
to trust with my thoughts. The world is
not what it was only last year. I suspect
everyone of ill doing; my mother says I
am becoming paranoid. Until I write
again, I remain.
Faithfully,
Margo
