The Celts (pronounced Kelts) were a network
of tribes that inhabited much of western
Europe about two thousand years ago.
Although they shared a similar way of life,
each tribe was different. Most Celtic tribes
lived in small villages or in huts.
The Celts are known for being proud, fierce,
artistic, and learned people. They were
skilled farmers, warriors, poets, and
metalworkers. A large portion of their tools
and weapons were made of metals such as
iron, bronze, copper, gold, and silver. Many
of their beautiful metal craftworks survive to
this day. They can be distinguished as Celtic
by the intricate and decorative knotwork
and stylized animals etched into the metal.
