The Right to Vote
Have you ever voted for class president? Maybe your class has cast votes for
the best movie star or type of ice cream. Voting for members of the government is
very important. In the United States and Canada, you have to be 18 to vote in one
of these elections. Not everyone has been able to vote in the past. In the United
States, women were not allowed to vote until 1920. A special law was passed in
1965 to make sure that all adults get to vote. When you vote, you have a say in who
serves in the government and what kinds of laws they pass. Some people say that
voting is the most important thing that people can do.
