Pixelmator Photo
(£4.99)

To help us win the battle for
picture perfection, Pixelmator
Photo boasts a collection of
intelligent Machine Learning
(ML) photo-fixing tools that can help us
quickly produce true colours, balanced
exposures and better compositions. These
tools may not produce the exact look that we
desire but they can act as a springboard to
creating a better looking shot. For example,
it can be a challenge to capture children or
pets in the best position within the frame.

Pixelmator Photo’s intelligent ML cropping tool
helps you experiment with more aesthetically
pleasing compositions. You can then fine-tune
the results manually with a handy Rule of
Thirds grid. This grid helps you place a subject
in part of the frame that corresponds to classic
rules of composition used by painters over the
centuries. On this spread we’ll show you how
to use the intelligent ML tools as a shortcut
to conquering common picture problems and
then demonstrate how to fine-tune the results
manually. George Cairns

HOW TO Improve composition >

1

Choose a shape
Browse to a photo. Tap Import. Select
the Aspect Ratio icon at the bottom left.
Tap on different shapes to crop the shot.
The main subject remains in the same
position in each cropped version,
regardless of the shape.

2

Intelligent cropping
Tap the X icon to cancel the crop.
Tap Reset. Now tap ML Crop. Tap on the
yellow Aspect Ratio icon. Now when you
choose options such as 4:5, our subject is
offset to the right of the frame with more
space to run into at the left.

3

Fine-tune the crop
Tap on a corner handle of the crop
overlay and drag to reshape the cropped
shot. A grid will appear. By placing
intersecting grid lines over the dog we
can put her at a point in the frame where
the eye is naturally drawn to her.
