Chapter 4 Storytelling with Light 131

there are many diff erent ways in which light-sensitive products react to
light. Th e sensitivity to light of a particular emulsion or other photographic
surface is expressed by ISO rating and exposure index (EI) values. Film speed
ratings, determined by offi cial standards and referred to by such terms as ISO
(International Standardization Organization) or the older ASA (American
Standards Association) index, are values that measure the sensitivity of a
particular fi lm stock or photographic medium and are used to determine
the appropriate exposure settings (f-stop and shutter speed).
