Project: A Portrait

For this exercise, you have a great deal of creative freedom to produce a short
that depicts of portrait of a place or person. You are encouraged to express the
essence of a place or person through a succession of images and sounds. You
will determine the structure, pace, tone, and style of the movie without the
need to develop a narrative.
A. “A portrait” – You must plan, shoot, and present a short video piece
that off ers a personal interpretation of the idea of “a portrait” to the
class. Choose one:


  1. A self-portrait

  2. A portrait of a person with whom you are personally familiar.

  3. A portrait of a place—interior or exterior
    B. Objectives and preparations – If requested by the instructor, submit
    the following:

  4. A four- to six-sentence description of your objectives for this
    pr oject, including visual plan, desired tone, and structure of
    the short.

  5. A production list including: personnel; locations; dates of
    shooting and editing.
    C. Guidelines

  6. From three to eight minutes in length, showing a structure
    that allows for comprehension by the viewer, such as through
    elements found in music.

  7. Th is is an individual project.

  8. You may use material generated through Writing 5, although
    this is not necessary.

  9. Attention to sound editing is important, whether through
    se lective cuts, mixing, or sound design (may include voice(s),
    sound eff ects, music, and so forth).
