8 Moving Images: Making Movies, Understanding Media

a character’s head and the top of the frame and lead room is the space between
the “front” of the character’s face and the side of the frame towards which he
or she is turned.
Th e rest of the framing descriptions continue to expose more of the human
fi gure. Th e shot that moves us to a view that does not exclusively feature the
human face or a detail of an object is the close shot (CS) in which the frame
line crosses the character’s chest. A medium shot (MS) puts the frame at the
