technical information, design standards, and the tone of the fi lm to direct
their inventions. During location scouting around Japan for the James Bond
fi lm You Only Live Twice, production designer Ken Adam fl ew over an area
of volcanoes with producer Cubby Broccoli. Ken Adam asked, “Wouldn’t
it be great if the villain could have his headquarters in one of these extinct
craters?” and made a quick sketch. It became one of the most recognizable,
grandiose sets in fi lm history.
