Analysis: Taking Apart the Puzzle

For your fi nal analytical work in this text, you will consider movies such as
Th e Pitch by Nash Edgerton (see included DVD) from the production angle.
In order to do this, you need the most complete available list of credits for the
production.
For this series of shorts or feature fi lms, answer the follow questions:
A. Pre-production


  1. From all the evidence you have, what were the most
    important considerations for the following tasks:
    a. Assistant director
    b. Cinematographer
    c. Sound recordist
    d. Production designer (or director, depending on type of
    production)

  2. What were the fi v e most important pre-production decisions
    in the creation of this motion picture? Why do you choose
    these fi ve decisions?
    B. Production

  3. In what ways does production value enhance the story and
    the visual expressiveness of the moving images?

  4. Comment on the integrity of the performances in the fi lm.
    Do they seem to refl ect a coherent interpretation of the story?
    Does the direction of this fi lm seem consistent to you?
    C. Post-production

  5. What is the pace of the editing of the movie? How does the
    editing style serve the story?

  6. In what ways is sound used in the fi lm? How do sound
    editing and design serve the story?
    D. Th e Big Picture – Evaluate the overall impact of the movie, including
    its theme and integrity.
