Writing: Pieces of the Puzzle
For this unit, you do not need to produce a new screenplay. As you saw in
Chapter 7, certain scripts produced for that unit are to be produced in this
chapter. If you had a script that fulfi lled the guidelines for this chapter’s
project, you will have the opportunity to make a motion picture from that
screenplay at this time.
Th us, the writing material you will complete depends on the role you
plan to fulfi ll in the following project. Once you determine your job on this
chapter project, you can complete your writing for this chapter for one of the
following roles: director; assistant director; cinematographer; art direction;
sound. Please note that some of the work is not actual writing, such as the
organization of the assistant director or cinematographer.
A. Director – You have written your script while working on Chapter 7,
now complete the following work to prepare for the shoot:
- Shot List
- Production Statement – Write a brief description of your
objectives in creating this motion picture, including your
conception of its theme, intended tone, and style.
B. Assistant Director –Your role on this production is a cross between
producer and assistant director. - Schedule, including precise shooting times and personnel
- Production Portfolio – Compile the work produced by the
production team in a folder and prepare a list of permissions
and elements necessary to the shoot.
C. Cinematographer - Visual Preparations – Pr epare a storyboard or detailed fl oor
plans from the director’s shot list. - Designing the Photography – Write one paragraph indicating
intentions on camera movement, focus, and expected lighting
tools and situations.
D. Production Designer - Screenplay analysis – Written as a list or notes directly on a
copy of the script, comments on locations, costumes, and other
production design. - Design plan – Create a blueprint or model of a location for the
project.
E. Sound mixer/Sound designer - Schedule – List of shoot days with locations and equipment and
personnel needs. - Audio Mix – Write one paragraph indicating intentions on
audio recording and sound design for the motion picture.
