Rossini regarded Guglielmi, along with Cimarosa and Paisiello, as his most
significant predecessors, and Stendhal considered him the creator of opera
buffa. La sposa fedelewas successful in Venice, London, and elsewhere. A
German libretto, entitled Roert und Kalliste, was used for a Berlin perfor-
mance in 1775; it was something of a comic parody of the original. Compari-
son, musical examples.
Guglielmi wrote more than 80 operas, about 35 of them serieand the others buffe.
The comic works are described in a Ph.D. dissertation by Kay M. Lipton, “The opere
buffeof Pietro Alessandro Guglielmi in Vienna and Esterháza: Contributions to the
Development of opera buffabetween 1786 and 1793,” U. of California at Los Ange-
les, 1995; 784p.

A basic biography, giving correspondence, with program notes and reception

“Eléazar” (hero of La juive) is consistently misspelled “Elazar.” Bare worklist,
backnotes, general index.
In Karin Pendle’s study of Scribe/Auber (#462) there is some treatment of this now-
neglected composer. He was of considerable interest to Richard Wagner, whose essay
about him is in the Gesammelte Schriften(#1981), v.5, 35–55.
