Opera

(Marvins-Underground-K-12) #1
A journal issue devoted to 19 papers from a colloquium in Siena, 1983. Nine
of the contributions relate to opera. These are the most useful: Martin
Ruhnke, “Zum Rezitativ der opera seriavor Hasse”; Reinhard Wiesend,
“Tonartendisposition und Rollenhierarchie in Hasses Opern”; and Gordana
Lazarevich, “Hasse as a Comic Dramatist: The Neapolitan Intermezzi.”
1003.Hasse-Studien,1–, 1990–. Hamburg: Carus, 1990–. ML410 .H35 H38.
V.3, 1996, is the last one seen. A view of “Hasses Opern und die Gegenwart,”
by Reinhard Wiesend, is in v.1, 7–12. The article’s footnotes cite the major
Hasse literature and editions. A facsimile of the Piramo e Tisbe (it is spelled
Thisbeon the title page) libretto (Vienna, 1768) is printed in v.3, along with
two brief articles about the opera.

(1975): 309–329. German translation as “Glucksche Aspekte in einem
    Spätwerk Hasses,” Hasse-Studien3 (1996): 5–23.
Piramo e Tisbewas a traditional Italian opera in its conception and structure,
but it showed “progressive” elements as well—for example, the use of accom-
panied recitative as a means to continuity.

In this interesting correspondence, Hasse provides much information about
Venetian life, personalities, and opera. He talks about works he is composing
and comments on Gluck and the reformists (he was not one of them). Good
bibliography of some 300 entries, index.

  3. Heartz, Daniel. “Hasse, Galuppi, and Metastasio.” In Muraro (#2576), v.1,
    309–340.
Metastasio’s libretto of Artatersewas set by Hasse (1730); the opera is ana-
lyzed by Heartz, with comments by contemporaries. The poet objected to lib-
erties taken in a later setting, by Galuppi (1749). Charles Burney’s comments
    on that dispute are given.
