Nine essays by various specialists, useful for material on originality, Haydn’s
library, and the Vienna musical scene. One contribution, by Rebecca Green, is
specific to opera: “Representing the Aristocracy: The Operatic Haydn and Le
pescatrici.” It shows how Haydn flattered his aristocratic audiences through
textual adjustments (in this case of a Goldoni libretto) and gives a musical
analysis of the opera, written for a wedding celebration at Esterháza in 1770.

Valuable coverage of Haydn bibliography is presented in various volumes: A
base list of 724 writings (about 50 on opera) appeared in 1974; writings of
1973–1983 appeared in 1985; those of 1984–1990 (1,255 entries, about 78 on
opera) in 1986/1994. These bibliographies give full data on each item, and
they are indexed by topic. A “Kolloquium über Haydns Opern,” in 2:2 (May
1969): 113–118, gave a list of the operas with facts on the premiere and other
background data, plus a useful inventory of the singing roles. Otherwise the
Studienhave presented only occasional short articles on the operas.
1016.Haydn Yearbook = Haydn Jahrbuch,v.1–, 1962–. Eisenstadt: Verein Interna-
tionale Joseph Haydn Stiftung, 1962–. Annual. ML410 .H4 H4.
Nothing of relevance to the operas was published until v.20, 1996, when a
series of facsimiles of the libretti began to appear, with commentary by H. C.
Robbins Landon.
