Her Céphale et Procris(1694) was the first opera by a woman to be staged at the Paris
Opéra.

Stefano Landi (ca. 1590–ca. 1655)


His Sant’Alessio(1632) was the first opera on a historical subject. Landi had
some stature as an operatic pioneer but is largely forgotten today. In Murata
(#446) there is a treatment of Sant’Alessio, because the librettist was
Rospigliosi. And Pirrotta’s essay in New Looks(#2429) gives him some atten-
tion. There is also a dissertation:
