from British Universities. New York: Garland, 1989. 439p. ISBN 0-8240-
    0192-3. ML410 .M674 D7.
Milhaud wrote 16 operas, all of which are examined in this valuable work.
Genesis, plot, libretto studies, formal analysis, and reception accounts are
given. Drake finds no large-scale harmonic organization, because of the modal
basis of the composer’s idiom. Instead there are long, slowly unfolding melodic
lines. Reproduced from the typescript of Drake’s dissertation at the U. of
Oxford, the print version suffers from scarcely legible musical examples.
    Strong bibliography, no index.
