mentary Biography.Stanford, Calif.: Stanford U. Press, 1991. xvii, 192p. ISBN
    0-8047-1955-1. ML410 .M95 D48.
This is “not a completion” of the documentary work but “an attempt to
explore systematically a number of previously overlooked sources, principally
newspapers and other periodicals of the 18th century.” Materials are orga-
nized chronologically according to the events they describe. Everything is in
English translation only. List of sources consulted, general index, title index.

Letters and Documents

The numerous publications of this material are cited with comments in Hastings
(#1259), 71–73. A specialist in the physical characteristics of the autographs has an
important contribution:

  1. Tyson, Alan. Mozart: Studies of the Autograph Scores. Cambridge, Mass.:
    Harvard U.P., 1987. 381p. ISBN 0-6745-8830-4. ML410 .M9 T95.
A collection of 18 essays, all but one previously published, which approach the
scores through study of paper, inks, methods of copyists, and other internal
evidence. Tyson is able to authenticate and date the manuscripts and to clarify
questions about them. Four of the pieces are about operas; they are entered
separately in this section: #1294 on Clemenza,#1300 on Così fan tutte, and
#1320 and #1321 on Figaro. Backnotes, indexes.

Operas in General

  1. Dent, Edward Joseph. Mozart’s Operas: A Critical Study. 2nd ed. London:
    Oxford U.P., 1947. 276p. ML410 .M9 D32.
First edition, 1913. The intention of the new edition was to appeal more to
“the general reader rather than... the musicologist.” However, the original
edition was not highly technical either; both editions offer sensible program
notes, without analysis. Expansive index of names and titles.

  2. Kunze, Stefan. Mozarts Opern.Stuttgart: Reclam, 1984. 685p. ISBN 3-15-
    00326-6. ML410 .M9 K94.
An imposing tome, to be sure, with 175 musical examples and 38 pictures, but
the extensive commentaries on the operas do not add to previous knowledge.
In a sense, Kunze diminishes earlier research in his citations by concentrating
strongly on German scholarship and neglecting essential English language
    writings. Weak bibliography; name index.

  3. Heartz, Daniel. Mozart’s Operas. Ed. Thomas Bauman. Berkeley: U. of Cali-
    fornia Press, 1990. 363p. ISBN 0-520-06862-9. ML410 .M9 H2.
A valuable collection of 16 essays by Heartz, 6 of them newly published, and 2
new essays by Bauman. These are entered separately in this section: Heartz on
the genesis of Le nozze di Figaro(#1323), on sources of Così fan tutte(#1304),
on parallels between La clemenza di Titoand Die Zauberflöte(#1296), and on
the overture to La clemenza di Tito(#1298); and Bauman on instrumental
