Opera

(Marvins-Underground-K-12) #1

XVIII. Countries

Listed in this chapter are works that provide information about operatic composition
and operatic performance, arranged geographically. The intention is to describe the
most significant works that are specifically or primarily concerned with opera in each
country (beginning with one region, Latin America). Works of a more general nature,
in which some operatic facts may be found, are cited when no specialized publications
are available. In some cases such citations are brief, with pointers to more substantial
descriptions in IOMor elsewhere.
The reader is reminded that the content of many general histories and other refer-
ence works already entered in earlier chapters includes attention to individual coun-
tries.
Names of countries are rendered in the native spelling first, transliterated if neces-
sary into Roman script, with English and other names following if such forms appear
in the important literature. Country names are in alphabetical order under their En-
glish names.
Material under each country is usually set forth in a standard sequence:

  1. Editions

  2. Bibliographies

  3. Music in general
    a. Collections
    b. Histories
    c. Biographies

  4. Opera
    a. Collections
    b. Histories (subdivided by period as appropriate)
    c. Biographies
    d. Cities, regions, and theaters

These subdivisions are used as needed and modified in some cases.

Latin America

A useful, if now rather dated, guide to writings about music in the region and in each
country is IOM2, which presents 493 annotated entries.
