    The first Monnaie was built in 1700; the present structure dates from 1856,
    extensively renovated and reopened in 1986. Renamed the Opéra National in
    1963, it is the major opera house of the country. This is a chronology of per-
    formances, with casts and a title index. Bibliography has only six items.

    The Royal Flemish Opera (Vlaamsche Opera) opened in 1893; this is a
    chronology of works performed through 1942–1943, with a historical narra-
    tive. All operas in the house are sung in Flemish. Kaufmanmentions a book
    (not seen by him; title not verified) that extends the chronology: Koninklijke
    vlaamse oper Antwerpen gedenkklanken 1893–1963,by Renaat Verbruggen
    (Antwerp, 1965).

  6. Sanders, L. Onderzoek opera en publiek te Antwerpen. Antwerp: Dienst Soci-
    ologie, 1974. 2v. ML1726.8 .A7 S25.
    Essentially a statistical study of operagoing and financial-sociological consid-
    erations but does give some facts on several Belgian opera companies. Bibliog-
    raphy of about 100 entries is of some use despite its incomplete data. No
    index.
