Naples: Teatro San Carlo
Teatro di San Carlo opened in 1737, burned in 1816, and was rebuilt in six months.
Damaged but not destroyed in World War II, it is the oldest structure still in use for
opera.

V.1 consists of essays by various writers, forming a documented, illustrated,
narrative history. V.2 is a chronology, 1737–1986/1987, with index of singers

An informal look at people and events associated with the theater: the
Neapolitans Piccinni, Paisiello, Cimarosa, and Zingarelli; then Rossini’s 10
operas for Naples; many of Donizetti’s (including Maria Stuardaand Lucia).
Caruso is almost missing: he sang there in 1901, was not well received, and
never returned.

A vaguely conceived chronicle: not a chronology but a list of works in approx-
imate order. Casts are sometimes given. Kaufmanwarns against numerous
errors. But the work is useful for a librettist index and a singer index.
