    A valuable study of musical life in the city, including orchestral concerts and
    opera. The Teatro Carolino opened in 1809 as an enlarged reconstruction of a
    building that had housed opera since 1726. Its name was changed to Teatro
    Bellini in 1860. The later Teatro Massimo, opened in 1897, became the princi-
    pal opera house. Chronologies for the seasons 1808/1809–1896/1897; title
    list; and lists of composers, impresarios, directors, and singers. No general
    index.

    for the Teatro Massimo is related, with much detail on the construction and
    specifications. The theater opened on 16 May 1897 with Falstaff.Its history is
    told to 1974, when it closed, with good photographs. Indexes give excellent
    access: titles, composers, soloists, librettists, scene designers, costumers, chore-
    ographers, and conductors.
