did before it fell into flames.” Many photos show the fire (29 January 1996) in

    variable stability of the enterprise during the period. Extensively footnoted,
    bibliography of about 400 primary and secondary sources, name index.

Lithuania (Lietuvos Respublika; Lietuva)


The country declared its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. All the scholarly
writing on opera is in Lithuanian, except a master’s thesis by Vytas Nakas, “Jurgis Kar-
navicius: Grazina,the First Lithuanian Opera” (Indiana U., 1974); the abstract in
RILMindicates coverage of Lithuanian opera in general. Three items in Lithuanian:
